David and Julie Browning's Travels
Where to go next? We still have a couple of days before we need to be in
Milan to fly to Prague. After throwing a few darts at Google maps we've
decided to head up into Switzerland, to a place called Locarno. It sits
on the northern end of Lake Maggiore. We stayed there last year, at
Verbania, down at the southern end. So, off we went. There is still a
good covering of snow all the way to the lakes area. After passing Milan, we headed north towards Switzerland. We'll be crossing the border at Como, where we stayed the year before.
Crossed into Switzerland, 40euros lighter. They don't have tolls here. But if
you're a tourist you have to buy a "driving in Switzerland" pass. Damned
Swiss - it's always about the money.
Anyway, on to Locarno. What a magnificent spot. The town is still covered in snow from
the previous few days. The peaks surrounding the town are stark and
white against the blue skies. Our hotel is a few streets back from the
lake. But they have upgraded our room to one with a view (no charge).
Who said the Swiss are all about the money? And what a view. The lake,
the mountains, the town. Postcard perfect.
We caught the ferry across to the other side of the lake to Magadino for a bit of
exploring. Turned out to be a bit of a waste of time. Nothing there
except residential. No shops, cafes etc. Everything seemed to be closed
up. Not even any people walking the streets.
Still, it was a very pleasant ferry ride on the lake. Gives you a completely different perspective.
Tomorrow we are headed for Milan for a couple of days. Then it's off to Prague
to meet up with Jake Sam & Emily for Christmas.
