David and Julie Browning's Travels
12/12/2012 - Today we left Florence to head up to the northern lakes area and Desenzano la Garda.
We had a great time in Florence, but time to move on. We've visited the
lakes area previously (Lakes Como and Maggiore), so this time we thought we'd go to the biggest of the lakes, Lake Garda. Our previous visits have revealed lakes of clear blue waters sunearedd by snow capped mountains, and this was to be once again. As we nbeared our destination we could see the snow capped peaks looming nearer in the distance.
As we were driving into the township we could see light coverings of snow on the ground and in the trees. Perhaps snowing on the lake? Hopefully.
Checked into the hotel (and very nice it is too - Villarosa Hotel), and set off for a bit of a walk around the area (checking out the cafes and restaurants). It's freezing cold, about 3degrees. Might get snow tonight yet. Desenzano is definitely a summer destination. A lot of the
hotels and restaurants are closed up for the winter. Still enough which is open to make it a pleasant place to stay (besides, the setting is to die for).
13/12/2012 - Lake Garda. A beautiful spot. Weatherwise, yesterday was a bit ****. Overcast and cold and rainy. So, a drive around the lake seemed to be the best way to spend the day.
First stop was Sirmione, and old fortified town/port. Even though the town seemed to be closed
up for the winter, it was still a very pleasant stroll through the winding streets and gardens. Found a nice warm ristorante for a warm cup of coffee and cake.
The remaining part of the trip was rather uneventful. Just a pleasant drive along thelake, through some charming villages, with snow capped peaks forming a spectacular
backdrop.
14/12/2012 - Speaking of snow, it snowed last night. Woke this morning to see a
blanket of snow covering everything. Still snowing at breakfast. Looks like a picture postcard outside. Not much chance of any sightseeing today. Good day to stay inside and keep warm.
