David and Julie Browning's Travels
Finally made it to Geneva at 0630 in the morning (36 hours after leaving Townsville). We were both pretty well exhausted, and we still had a two hour drive to Grenoble. We rang the Citroen Rep in Geneva (Mr Ivanov) to arrange being picked up from the airport. Surprisingly, he was at the airport when he said he would be, at the place we were told to wait. We assumed that the directions would have been lost in translation (as they often are). So, after a 10min wait in the freezing cold (did we mention how cold it is here? Well its bloody cold!!), we were soon being driven to the Citroen lease depot to pick up our car. And by "depot" I mean the car park of a hotel.
After spending 15mins filling out paperwork and getting familiar with the car, we were soon setting off for Grenoble. It wasn't until we had gone through the first toll booth that we realized we didn't have any cash with us to pay for tolls - the last time we were here our credit cards didn't work in the payment machines at the toll stations. "No worries," we thought, "we'll get some cash out at one of the petrol/food stops that are prevalent on the highways. Wrong!! Every petrol stop we pulled into didn't have an ATM machine (last year they were everywhere). And we were getting closer to the point where we needed money to get through the toll gates. And to add to the dilemma, the GPS decided to stop navigating. Which is OK while we are on the highway. But once we entered Grenoble, we would be in need of every navigation aid we could get.
Remember I mentioned that the omens were there for a good trip (planes arriving and leaving on time at every stage of the trip). Well, the travel Gods must have been looking down on us. We arrived at the Toll station (still with no money in our wallets), drove up to the gate, and behold, the credit card worked in the machine!! And then, further down the road, the GPS suddenly started navigating again (big sighs of relief).
So, after almost 36 hours of traveling, we finally made it to Grenoble. We were both pretty exhausted by now. The day is going to be a write off. By suppertime we w ere about dead on our feet. Which was a shame, because we found s great little restaurant just down the road. But we were both too tired to enjoy the meals (roasted duck breast with foi gras and pork mignon with broccoli mash). Hopefully by tomorrow we'll be fully recovered and ready for a day of sightseeing.
