Sunday dawned sunny and we set out from the hotel in search of breakfast. Just a couple of streets from the hotel we found Rue Saint-Jean with Sunday market stalls and interesting shops and cafes, including Cafe Le Hobbit which looked popular and a good bet for breakfast. And indeed it was! Dave had pancakes with maple syrup and custard (or creme anglaise as we're in French speaking Quebec) and yes, know you'll be wondering, they were good and the custard was a plus but not still not quite up to the standard of Laura's. Jill had les cereales with fresh fruit, yoghurt and fruit bread - quite a plate full! And cafe au lait en bols, very French! If only Jill could get Spanish out of her head and French in it all would be well but 'por favor' is much more readily called to mind than 's'il vous plait'. Oh well, perhaps by the time we leave Quebec......
We then wandered into the old town to visit the tourist information office to find information on walking around the city: not so very helpful as the assistants were really geared up to explain about museums and such like. However we did get a local map and were directed towards some of the interesting streets in the old town. Some of this did turn out to be reminiscent of Bowness-on-Windermere, so we now refer to the touristy bits of old Quebec City as Bowness-en-St. Laurent. We enjoyed walking, in some places along the tops of, the city walls. We had good views over the St. Lawrence river and into the old town which had a very European feel. Towards the end of this walk we met a Canadian Parks warden doing a survey so were able to feedback that whilst we probably wouldn't choose to go in a museum about the town's walled fortifications that we would have appreciated some interpretative signs along the wall.
We sat a while in the sunshine by a fountain watching unwary tourists get a little wet when the jets were at their highest and the wind gusted. Then back to the hotel to get ready to go out for dinner. Dave had spotted an interesting Moroccan restaurant down a short alley behind Moroccan style gates in the old town that we decided to give a go. Maison Marocaine was a good choice and we enjoyed tasty authentic Moroccan food.
