Well I'm back In Sydney & I have only 1 more day in Australia before I head off to Christchurch, NZ. So I guess this is the time to write about my favourite spots in Oz & summarise how the trip has gone so far.
It started in early December here in Sydney. Its a nice spot, loads of backpackers here, probably too many & to me the place doesnt feel that Australian compared to other cities & towns I visited. Its just too multi-cultural. It has some spectacular sites, the Harbour Bridge, Opera House & Olympic Park are cool + looking out from the Sky tower is worthwhile as well. A nice city but no where near my favourite place in Oz. New Years Eve fireworks were something else though..Special!!
After Sydney I headed off to Melbourne in early January. This place I really liked & if I did ever consider staying in Oz I think this would be the only place id live in. Not as many backpackers as Sydney here but its got a bit of everything does Melbourne. Its feels like a mix of European & American culture. The sports arena, mcg, rod laver arena are cool + the nite life is class as well. The Great Ocean road trip is a must, but dont do Phillip Island, its a poor day out, boring as hell. Top city, easily best in Oz.
Next up was Adelaide, a place that no one seems to go to & all I heard was negative things before I went. I really enjoyed Adelaide, its a lovely town, easy to get around & its got an older cultural feel to it, I doubt this town was built by British & Irish convicts. One of my favourite cities in Oz. The Barossa Wine Valley Tour is a must in Adelaide, really good day out. I liked Adelaide so much I spent 15 days there instead of 4 I had initially planned.
Perth was next, the most isolated capital city in the world they say. Maybe for good reason, its a strange place with strange people. Id heard mixed reactions to Perth before i went but most poeple said it was a cool spot. I thought it was boring as hell. Perth city has nothing in it, no real culture or identity to it. On the other hand Fremantle a small town 30 minutes by train from Perth, is a really nice place & the prison is a must see. Perth is ok for 3/4 days, thats it, ye I think its my least favourite place in Oz.
Next was Darwin & I really enjoyed this little city. The town is full of bars, sports bars, niteclubs & real easy to get around. Plus if your up during the wet season then you'll experience 4 seasons in one day, cool. You feel the place has a lot of history to it that goes back to the world wars & to the huge cyclone that hit the town in xmas 1974, wiping it out virtually. Must do things are the croc cruise, just amazing, you wont experience anything like that again. Well guess what I really loved Darwin.
After Darwin came Alice Spings & Ayers Rock. This is true outback Oz & definetly worth doing by everyone. Alice is just a small town, its nice & scenic & hot as hell, you'll need flynets just wandering around as temps can hit above 50c. The main town is mostly populated by aboringinals, so you get a real australian feel to the place. Ayers rock is cool, a day trip is enough unless you like camping with snakes & spiders in blistering hot conditions. Its really impressive.
Finally on my Australian adventure came Bribane & Byron Bay. Brisbane is the 3rd biggest city in Oz but its got a small town feel to it. There aint a lot to do there but saying that its a nice city to walk around & very scenic. Byron Bay is a nice little town, same size as Alice Springs, a little smaller than Perth. Its defintely worth a look for a day plus the nite life is meant to be cool there but I didnt experience that.
Well thats it, I have visted Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Darwin, Alice Springs & Ayers Rock & Brisbane & Byron Bay while I've been in Oz. Heres how I rate them from 1 to 7, 1 being the best place.
1. Melbourne; 2. Darwin; 3. Adelaide; 4. Alice Springs & Ayers Rock; 5. Sydney; 6. Brisbane & Byron Bay; 7. Perth.
Roll on New Zealand!!!!!
