After some amzing views in the Cameron Highlands, we set-off on an afternoon bus to George Town, the old city in the North of Penang. This is an island on the west coast of malaysia and is accessible by either boat or bridge. Luckily we managed to get a bus over the bridge!!! As we arrived, we didnt see much of the City as it was dark and we were arriving gone 10pm so we checked in to the Kimberley House. Great location and great price for 7punds a night with plenty of foody places near by. Although we did have to share bathrooms and shoers with our floor which were clean but then again it was a new hostel so everyting was reasoably clean. We decided to extend this by an extra 4 days. The following day we sat down with a free coffee (which we abused from the hostel...when in Rome!) and planned our day. We collected 3 different maps, all free of course. The first was a sight seeing map of G-Town but more importantly the old town. The best bits to see. The second map was a food map (oh yes these exist!) of all the places to eat. This was used!! The last map was a street art map to look for certain pieces of art put up around the town. Sam loved this to which we organised pieces of sight seeing around some of these points. We figured we could see the best stuff in 2 days and go to Penang Hill on the last full day before heading off to Medan. Armed and ready to go we hit the sweltering G-Town. After searching for 'brunch' we hit little india! It felt just like home! Over the 2 days we hit lots of sights in-particular the Penang History Museum which was genuinely really interesting. Mainly due to it being about Britain!! Also the Blue Mansion owned by one of the wealthiest men in the world in the 19th and early 20th Century was definately worth a visit. We ate very well in Penang as it has one of the richest diversities in food in Asia with a real Malay, Chinese and Indian culture. It also helped that the food was twice the size of Thailand!!! Ha! We tried a lot of the dishes on offer and all were brilliant but I am beginning to miss Thai Food! I never thought I would say that comment to which Sam loves!! More My Thai and Thai Fever when we get back. The last full day we had a chance to go to Penang Hill. A huge lump in the middle of Penang looking over to Malaysia mainland. When we arrived we were contemplating not bothering as the weather was horrendous however it calmed and we headed up the hill by cable car. Once at the top we had budget Tea and Scones (one of each to share!) whilst it rained again before the skies cleared and we got some really good photos.
On the last night we spent in search of Hutton Street (in george town!!) and ate at a great food court near the blue mansion. I had the hottest curry I have ever had. In fact it was glowing red and the suce was made up of 100s of red chillis blended just for the sauce. I really struggled as Sam sat back and enjoyed her Crispy Pata which just looked mouth droolingly good! whereas I was trying not to lose man points by crying my eyes out!!
After a short fire 10 days in Malaysia though, we are sad to leave and wish we could have spent longer. However Indonesia and those Orangutans wait...!!!
