After a relaxing few hours sleep in the nicest hotel yet, we woke to check out what a brekkie would be like in a nice hotel! We were both happy with the results! Sam especially as she had been craving cereal! A selection of cereals, fesh milk!!, proper coffee, toast, fruit and danish pastries! I think it is safe to say we got our monies worth from breakfast!
We spent the rest of the morning searchingn or a proper hotel/hostel for the next few nights. An affordable one! This is where we found the legian hotel. Free muffin and coffee in a morning and a gret room with a good bathroom! Again, bathrooms important!
After checking in we spent time organising doing laundry bundles and Sam checked out tripadvisor for food and things to do. Now we must say here, indonesian food had been pretty poor so we were both craving some western food and so that night finished off burger and fries each and never looked back after that in bali! The choices, price and standards of ribs, bbq, burgers and chicken was far better than some of the tripe being put together by the local foods! With a good nights kip and a little research, it was clear that kuta was good for one thing...surfing and beaches.
The next day we spent time at the beach and got some prices for surfing the following day. Sam was pretty confident about surfing after seeing the beginner waves observed that day, yet that all changed when we arrived to the beach! Our hotel was set back around a 200m walk down the road from the beach so we could see the waves as we got closer! The waves were 3 times the size of the previous day. Sams face dropped!
Excitement changed to nervous fear. On the beach we found a good deal for 2 hrs of lesson with an instructor each and rental of top and board. Now Sam will always say she was better at it than me, which is of course a lie. However she did excel but only in the second part of the hour. The waves were upto 10ft and the current was really strong and tough to continuously fight. Stonger than anything I had come accross before. So unsuprisingly, Sam was nervous at the start and after her board hit her in the neck, she sat out for a while but she battled the nerves to nail surfing after, standing up regularly! Nailed it! The guides were great too. We had a beer with them after and they had some interesting views! 1 of them had a girlfriend it seemed in every continenet! We both loved the surfing and had the ridiculous tan lines to show for it, (my tshirt was too small!).
We both really enjoyed Kuts and found it a relaxing change to the busibess of the some of the travelling we had already encountered. This was mainly due to the western feel and touristy feel to a place we would have dreaded had it not been for the lack of some descent grub!!!
Whilst in Kuta, we also came accross some old friends!! Sam had recieved a message from an old school friend she hadnt seen in the best part of 10 years, who was out on her honeymoon in Bali. After a few message exchanges we met up for a couple of drinks on the beach where it was nice to relax and watch the sun set with some fellow Brits. They had even offered to buy us dinner in one of the expensive seafood places on the island but we couldn't have done that. Very nice offer though and their pictures of that meal looked amazinhg!
The following day saw us emabrk on a mission to see Sophie and Bex again in the Seminyak area, a 30 minute walk along the side of the beach. Seminyak was a more up market tourist area with the more expensive restaurants and bars. We didnt choose to eat out fancy here but the area was lovely. We did however come accross an in-different way of arriving to Seminyak. A local approched us at the strat of our walk to meet the girls with a handful of cards. He asked us to pick one each and open tese cards to see if we had won a prize. NOw you can imagine what we were thinking, leave us alone...scam...scam...scam!!
Howver we had won 2 T-shirts and either: an i-pad2, 500USD or 7 days free accomodation. We were told we had definately won the t-shirts and one of the other 3! All we had to do was go to the hotel now by taxi in seminyak, speak with someone for a while then we get our prizes. Dodgy, yes but we would get a free taxi to Seminyak and a taxi anywhere after to wherever we wanted! So we choose the taxi (obviously) and were told it would be a presentation which we had to sit in for 30 minutes and then get our prizes. Quick message to Sophie saying we will be slightly late (nothing she isn't used to anyways!) and we were off to the hotel. Free taxi... check. Legitimate hotel...check! No way was this going to be real! After a quick chat with a receptionist it turned out we would have to return a few hours later for the presentation. We were not happy so they gave us another free taxi to meet the girls, another free taxi to pick us up later and again to drop us back off with the girls!!
We didnt have to watch the presentation either. On our return, we had missed the presentation and so were given 7 nights free accomodation in any of their hotels in certain cities in Asia. Not bad really.
After all the fussing anyways, we met up wih Sophie and Bex once again. It was really good to see them and we had a few drinks on the beach to the sunset on some cushions whilst catching up and listening to each others future plans. Both Sam and myself were a little gutted that this was to be the last meet up with the girls on the travels though. And we would have loved to have done more with them.
After a few really relaxing days with some old friends, it was time to meet some new old friends in Sanur and then on to Nusa Lembongan!
