Boy what a day, the overnight bus from Hoi An took 18 hours in the end as we were stuck in a monsoon. Today has been a chill out to recover, the mass of miles has took it it's toll.
Anyway, to continue where i left off in Hoi An, i decided to call this blog Cham & Chav. Chav due to Tim's orange suit which did make an apperance on Sun night and i have some pictures which i'll download soon. There was quite a stir at Treats bar, all centred around the suit where the waiters were taking it in turns to wear the jacket - don't ask me why. To cut a long story short we shot some pool, sank a few beers and decided to hit Hong Kong bar (dispite the hotel saying its not a good idea!?). Tim & Leicester Leon had assured us that it was the place to be, it turned out the complete opposite, it was dead, no atmosphere and in a very dark part of town. After a few beers, the music suddenly went off and there were a few locals hanging about, quite strange, anyway we all thought it was a good move to get on some bikes and get out quick. There's times when you let your guard down, this was one and when we got back we were quite relieved. Never felt uncomfortable or threatened once in Vietnam, this was the first and i'm sure the last. Tim & Leon had been there the night before and had a banging time (or so they told us) but when you have a gut feeling, you have to make the sensible decision.
Had to get up early next day, sore head and little sleep, off to the Cham ruins. last night we thought it would be a good idea to get bikes, this morning we're all too rough - the bus it is (well it is 35Km). Got some great photos and the surroundings are thought provoking, felt a bit p-issed that the Americans bombed the site so much as the Viet Cong were hidiing here. It took a real beattering and you can see the craters, is that not so wrong?. Anyway it's well worth a visit for half a day. The bus broke down on the way back (not too surprised), got a bit nervous as i had my second suit fitting and only 4 hours until the epic bus journey to Nha Trang. In the end it was ony a 45 minute delay, that's a good one for here !!
Very happy with the suit and, well at 50 quid who wouldn't be, the tailor recommended us a local restaurant for a late lunch and what a treat it was. I'm sure it was the tailors mother?. Anyway it was tucked away in a little alleyway, a real spit and sawdust place but and there was no menu, you got what they had!. The table was full of food enough for 4 really, the old lady (she must have been over 80) put the food out and wrapped the 1st bit of food for us to show us the ropes. Rice bread, salad, spring roll, veg, pork on top, rolled and then dipped in the tastiest peanut and chilli sauce i have ever had. There was another course with omelete, beanshoot pancakes, fruit and some tiger beer to wash down. It was fanastic. We sat for a couple of hours laughing and communicating with the family, funny how you can laugh and talk without language!?.
We have had some real monsoons and got soaked, who cares when it's so warm, did my last bit of shopping before the epic bus journey. Sick of shopping now, bartering is fun at first but there's a limit to the hassle involved.
Now in Nha trang, just off for a bite to eat, a few beers and see what's happening.
