After 155 days of travelling, 9 countries and enough adventures to last us a lifetime we finally arrived in our last country....Chile!!
After leaving the thermal baths in Bolivia and heading down from the dizzy and somewhat worrying 5000 metres above sea level, we turned up at the Bolivian border post, at 9:30am. Our bus to take us across the border scheduled for 10am.
The border crossing area was very different to what we have experienced thus far, Located high up (around 4400m) in the barren and haunting Altapano which consisted of only gravel and snow as far as you can see, with the odd snowcapped mountian around. Very windy and cold, with blinding fogs sweeping in without notice changing the landscape completely.
So we all got out of our jeep expecting a nice ride across the border but we were informed that the road was closed due to the snow, so the bus will be with you in 2 hours.
In the end the bus took 7 hours to arrive!
All we could do for 7 hours was walk around the windswept landscape, sit in the jeep (6 of us so not much space) and try to catch up on some sleep and reading (Emily reading a spanish copy of Harry Potter and Dave an English version of Great Expectations)
After a while the stranded passengers started playing boule with rocks and Emily took to rummaging through the boot of the jeep for any food. If the wait had been any longer we may of had to resort to eating each other for dinner.
But finally we were allowed on the bus and suddenly dropped another 2000 meters into Chile. We jumped off the bus and queued up to get through the border. By now we have aready been up for 13 hours so we were hoping for a smooth crossing.
As you may of guessed from the way this story is going that no.....it was not smooth.
Long queues and a very disorganised border post meant another 3 hours of queuing in the rain before we were allowed to enter this country.
Watching the chaos and disorganisation of the border crossing made us wonder how Chile managed to successfully rescue all those miners last year ! I guess they get themselves together when the worlds cameras are on them!
So a very long and tiring day, we were awake for a total of 20 hours and really did not expect Chile of all places to be so hard to get into!
But now we are in and have about 25 days to explore our last country before we head back to reality on 30th Jan !
