From the start we thought it might be a long shot getting all the way down south of the Americas, due to time and money but we made the commitment and booked a flight from Santiago down to Punta Arenas in Patagonia.
And here we are flying across the wild and desolate lands of Patagonia, where the mainland of the Americas starts to split up and become a haunting mix of countless mountains, glaciers, islands and rugged wastelands.
You cannot get a bus directly through Chilean Patagonia, you have to cross the Andes mountains and go through Argentina, at least a 36 hour bus trip. We think we have already earned our long distance bus miles so we decided to fly....and flying over was a great way to see this wild area of the planet with its amazing change of landscapes (the photo is of mountains, not clouds)
So when we arrive at Punta Arenas, our most southernly destination on this trip, we would have travelled approx 13,500 kilometers from the beginning (in a direct line from London, clearly a lot more in real terms) and 104 degree of latitude. Any further south and we would be standing on the ice sheets of Antartica.
So after 5.5 months of heading in a general roundabout southern direction we arrive at Punta Arenas and we are keen to find out what this town at the end of the world is like........
