Off Dave and Emily trotted to see some penguins. It was a bit of a mission to get there - a 3.5k walk, then 2 hour ferry ride, but 100% worth it. The whole of Isla Magdelena is completely covered with over 150 000 penguins. Mums, dads, teenagers and babies and all amazingly cute.
The Magellan penguins swim all the way down from their beaches in Brazil, past Argentina and through the straight to the barren island every September. Why? Because this far south has such long days. It means the penguins can take it in turns fishing from 4am till 11pm to keep their babies grey and fat and fluffy (but this same light means Dave and Emily struggle to get a good nights sleep)
The government have been really careful to keep tourism under control and the boat can only go once per day for one hour only. They`ve roped off a path, but the rope is only to stop humans as it is above penguin head height so they can waddle down to the sea unimpeded.
Everywhere you look, only about a half a metre away in some cases, are thousands and thousand of comical penguins. Some are snuggling in their burrows, some are waddling, some are rubbing noses, some are throwing their heads back and having a bit of a wail, some are frollicking in the sea and some even appear to be hugging and patting each other on the back.
An hour was not enough and neither was one memory card. Each penguin was cuter than the last or doing a more comedy walk.
Surrounded by 150,000 penguins in their natural habitat was a wonderful experience and very very amusing!
Emily would like to be reincarnated as a penguin if the mighty powers are listening.....Dave can then put her in a burrow and throw her fish.
