So day 2 of our trip took us into the altiplano, which is the largest area of high plateau in the world after Tibet.
The landscape changed dramatically from the salt plains of yesterday to vast expanses of scorched desert and mountains. We bounced along in the desert all day and were treated to many lakes (one of which was a red colour) and many areas where flamigos where hanging out.
We visited crazy shaped rock formations which are volcanic remains that jut out of the barren flat landscape, one area is called the Salvador Dali formation as the rocks are all strange shapes and out of place in the desert.
As we started to climb higher (up to 4400 above sea level) we had lunch in a beautiful area (see photo) then drove off to our accommodation for the evening. As we arrived the snow came down very hard and the landscape was now completely covered in a thick blanket of snow. It is amazing how quickly the landscape changes in this part of the world.
Our accommodation for the night can only be described as less than basic. We were all put in one cramped room and Emily`s bed was damp from the cold, rain and snow. So Dave and Emily had to share a single bed in a freezing cold room along with our fellow Columbians and Austrians.
A night of no sleep commenced before we were woken up a 4am to continue our amazing journey....
