So today we got out of the random place that is Orange Walk and jumped on the bus to San ignacio.
However to get to our destination, we required a transfer in Belize City. A city with a very bad reputation and generally not advisable to visit.
So we turned up at a slightly dodgy bus station and asked around for the bus to San ignacio. People told us it will be a while and that they can give us a lift half way there in their car (not advisable!) . We brushed them off and then hung about. Then a bus arrived and people started to queue behind a gate. So we got up with all our stuff ready to join the line.
Next thing we know a guy comes up to us and whispers that he will get us on the bus, and that if we don't listen to him we wont get on and be stuck in Belize City, which you really don't want!
So rather suspiciously we stood there, then as soon as the gate opened he shouted for us to run, as he said that lots of other ran.
The guy led us to the back of the bus where he opened the back door and told us to jump in. He took Emilys rucksack off her and gave her a leg up then (against all of Daves suspision) passed up her bag. Then dave had to throw his bag in and jump onto the bus...all the while loads of people are clambering all over him to get in.
Was totally crazy but the way to get on a bus in Belize City apparently!
Within about half a minute the bus was totally full. The guy them jumped up to our window and said 'Welcome to the rat race, mannnnn!' so we dropped him five dollars for a thanks (and hoped that he would continue to help naive gringos).
Was very suspicious of him but turned out he did us a massive favour.
They call them 'Chicken buses' and they are old American school buses (the ones you see in 1980's films) there is no luggage area apart from a dodgy small overhead bit so you have to sit there with your bags and rucksacks on your lap (which is the safest option unless you want your stuff nicked)....in our case we had to sit crammed in with all our stuff for three hours!
The photo is from our seat, a load of people had just go off so it got abit empty, however about half hour later loads got on and with no more room and them all crammed in the aisle, the driver told them all to sit on the floor so the police wont stop them - talk about safety!
Was quite an experience........
