My Trip
So from Whale Island it was the final stage to Saigon...via sleeper train, not before a Mexican dinner and Internet use. The Train was again quite comfortable but my burnt back didn't help. This was only a 9-hour journey though and it flew by.
So we arrived in Saigon, a bustling metropolis by Vietnam standards and even more mopeds than Hanoi. But we got to see the place where the monk burnt himself to death and the War museum, as well as pottering around as usual...I am good at that now. Seem to find fun anywhere.
Again the people in Saigon are lovely, friendly and smiley, even the reception girls were chatty and fun. Now there is a bit of Hassle in Saigon in the markets but generally you smile and say no! I have made a few tactical purchases including a Vietnamese hat, and a few other bits and bobs. Food here hasn't been that good really, and I did the unthinkable...yes I went to KFC...the only fast food place in the whole of Vietnam...I am so ashamed. It was really good though...Zinger tower burger Yum! The Museum is very hard hitting, and could make the sensitive person brake into tears with the atrocities of all sides, the Americans, the French, the North Vietnamese (Vietcong) and SVA (South Vietnamese Army). I took a couple of pictures just for your eyes...one exhibit, some unborn deformed babies in jars nearly made me loose my lunch! An after effect of Agent Orange - one of the chemicals the Americans used that effects the next generations more than the previous. Horrible I assure you. Well worth a visit though, especially cos I got my picture by an Apache helicopter...and saw some remarkable photos. Saigon's backpacker district is also fun, not as seedy or sleazy as Bangkok and some great little places to eat, shop and hang out
The highlight of Saigon was the Cucci Tunnels, the network the Vietnamese used to penetrate Saigon, ESP in the Tet offensive. These are the foxholes they used to escape bombings or enemy fire. And little did the Americans know it was right outside their strong hold. Marcus and I went down the whole way and it's a real eye opener, how people could move in these. We also got to fire real Machine Guns..."AK47 when you absolutely positively gotta kill every mofo in the room, except no substitutes" - remember the movie.
The kick back on the Automatic is a real eye opener...I had no idea if I hit the target but I didn't really care. You can fire over 500 bullets a minute, and the sound is deafening. So cool! The whole Tunnels, booby traps, abandoned tanks, fox holes and shooting real ammunition was so great.
We also watched a Vietcong movie where they slated the American Invaders...Indoctrination at its very best.
I cant believe I was in a tunnel an actual Vietcong soldier would have used...awesome.
From Saigon we went to the Mekong Delta, just south of Saigon. Water highways of Vietnam, its was quite interesting, we went to a Pottery to see how the Vietnamese make their Pots...hahahaha mum would have loved it. A popcorn factory, a toffee factory, a local home where we had the most amazing lunch with cucumber men and all. You should see these places they are just on the side of the rivers and their production is all they live on. There is no waste in these factories either everything gets reused.
Stitch has made some new friends...A pink Bear called Rodders (Katie's) and Penefold from Danger Mouse. They had a great time together chilling out and drinking...hes a nightmare that teddy - always socialising. We stayed over night at a local house, where we all got fed upon by the local bugs...Kim now has a record of 27 bites.... The mood was not impressed. We sat in Hammocks and Chairs just watching the night unfold. The Delta is quite peaceful. I made a new friend in a giant Python, as did flora when it tried to wrap itself around her arse.... I have never heard anyone scream like that. Dave and I drank Snake Wine...it wasn't as bad as people make out.... And we went on a leisurely two-person boat ride in traditional Vietnamese hats. I went with tour leader Kim! She's cool too, very chilled out and game for a laugh
We also got to see the floating market which is a vegetable market but on boats between traders. From here it was back to Saigon for a final night of dancing, drinking in the Rex (expensive) hotel (cocktails) and Vietnamese BBQ before we had an emotional goodbye. Holly, Gemma and Penny left first which I was quite sad about, since I got really close to them...They really made me feel so comfortable and included all throughout the tour. On top of the fact that I think they may be the nicest people in the world. I felt slightly lost without them there...but I will be touch....
Kim, Katie and Marcus were great too, really fun to hang out with and Marcus proposed to Katie on Whale Island so I had my 3rd engagement while away...Must be something in the water. But I wish them the best of luck; they are a great couple who deserves the very best. Kim really has been great too, entertaining to the end. And I am going to miss them all lots. The rest of the group was great as well, Jonny's stories on Whale Island about his Grandad killing Santa were hilarious and Marcus and Amanda were sure worth the money too. Ooh and I found the best beer in the world...BEERLAO.
Claire and Matt e-mailed saying they were looking forward to Sydney and Jules is definitely coming out so with those thoughts I am now In Singapore...awaiting the rain to stop. I am sure I have left loads out but that's enough time spent on here for now...I'm going to enjoy the tropical rain
