So it was off to explore Canaima, and first a boat ride across the Pink Lagoon. As you can see in the pictures, the water comes off a light red colour due to quartz deposits and a certain high acidic concentration. This water on the plus side is renowned for keep mosquitoes away! Woohooo! So it was across the lagoon passing three tremendous waterfalls, and onto an Island which would led to the Sapo Falls. Sapo means frog in Spanish, I was told. So it was pretty good going when the first, well the only wildlife, our tour guide showed us was a little orange tree frog!, as we trekked through the Venezuelan Jungle…Our tour guide is not what I expected, as we were told we would have a fluent in English guide, and he has very limited English and doesn't seem overly interested. He seems more interested in chatting up the Brazilian girl we have in our tour group, although she doesn't seem overly interested either. We reached Sapo Falls and it is pretty incredible, I mean I have seen Niagara, Howick, Jin Jin and many other spectacular falls, and I have swam up to lots in Australia and New Zealand, but these were so powerful and the fact we could walk underneath them was very cool. Esp. that one moment when all the water is falling on you, drenching you in a matter of milliseconds. The Ultimate Power shower…Shannon and I had stood under waterfalls in Thailand and Australia before, but the sheer power of this was so refreshing, esp. because of the heat as well. So through Sapo Falls, we scrambled up to the top, where Megan swears she saw a Tarantula…Hmmm sure it was a mere leaf of something like that. The top of the falls also has a stunning view of all of Canaima, the Table Top mountains in the distance, the pink lagoon shimmering in the sunshine and the crystal clear water leading up to the falls, which we went swimming and bathing in… Gorgeous! On the way back we crossed the Prairies, its incredible, how many different landscapes there are here, from Prairie land, like that you would se in America, to dense rainforest. So it was back across to the lodge, food, and bed…During dinner the most incredible monsoon downpour came on, best I have seen since Hong Kong all those years ago…suddenly out of nowhere. Tomorrow is our early start of 7am to get up to Angel Falls… hope the weather holds out and our tour guide improves.
