Guten MoganSo my German has been improving, maybe because its been a good 10 years since I last spoke it. Frau Bloomfield would be so proud of me. I have been shopping, out to dinner, out to the pubs and so far so good. This is not to say that I can hold a conversation, but I can say particular phrases with ease.My colleagues took me out to a place called Osterath (I think), its in the Meerbusch district, just west of Dusseldorf. They took me to this really freaky bar, that was very dive/grunge orientated, with Gunsn'Roses playing loudly and long haired Germans everywhere! Was so funny because they all think they can play pool, which is obviously a lie because even I could beat them. Didn't get in until 2ish, which is ok usually if you don't need to get up at 7am? I am definitely reliving my youth.Anyhow last week I went to Dusseldorf's "old town" as they call it. Its actually pretty well pretty! The architecture is semi modern (mainly due to the heavy bombing in the War), but it has a friendly atmosphere. There is a street which is famous for having the worlds longest bar - don't be fooled though (this is no sugarloaf), it means that if you put the bars in this street all together it would be the longest. Disappointing! We walked around the old town and sampled a couple of the local brews, I find the darker beer nicer than the light (what they call Pils, we call Lager!). Fustian brewery (very bad spelling I am sure) was my favorite, but as tradition calls for we passed many an Irish pub.We also visited the cafes and bars along the Rhine. Absolutely gorgeous down there, especially with the glorious weather we have been having. Last on the list was the largest funfair on the Rhine, now by funfair, I mean an ickle Alton Towers! Rollercoaster's, were alongside Teacups and Haunted houses. Also the funniest thing was a boxing show, where the audience can take on the boxers, if they win they get money but if they lose, they get nothing! So the show gets money from the audience to watch and some audience member gets the crap beaten out of them and pays for it! Madness.I also had the weirdest looking snack ever, fish in a roll, but a mini roll - the picture is priceless. So apart from my escapades running around Germany, I have been learning lots at work, but next week my boss is back so that will be the real curve. Looking forward to it thoughI will say this, traveling is great but working whilst traveling (and I mean traveling for work really!) isn't all its cracked up to be. Don't get me wrong, the hotel is nice, the pool and area are very nice, but I don't meet that many people because travelers do not usually stay in hotels!. Note to the wise!Anyhow I have to go and do some work I suppose.
