Day 6
Funnily enough it doesn't rain in Coober Pedy, annual rainfall of 170mm per year, but in typical Darcey holiday style, it poured the night JD slept in the tent.
I returned from an early morning stroll expecting to hear about Nicole's fantastic nights sleep but unfortunately she had traded the snoring for Matilda's foot in her back at regular intervals during the night.
Back on the road after a few mornings tours, Serbian Orthodox Church, the largest underground church in the world! A fascinating tour of Faye Naylor underground historic home which she hand dug with 2 lady friends in the early 60's. preserved as a museum and then a tour of her opal mine which made her a very wealthy woman!
Faye entered and exited through an approx 800mm round shaft which was around 10m deep. Opal miners are looking for a seam of gypsum. Opals form 800-1000mm below the gypsum seam. Faye started mining before mechanisation, everything was done on hands and knees with a pick, wheel barrow and bucket. There was no shower to look forward to at the end of the day as they had one 205L of water to last the fortnight.
We (some of us) did a little noodling, with JD pocket knife in an attempt to struck it lucky before we left town.
The girls did some opal shopping now that they had an appreciation of where they had come from.
Back on the road, and continued enthusiasm about road trains....."She's a truck'n life photo, awesome, I'll send it in!!!"
Relatively quiet from the back and my turn to drive! "Want me do 100 or 150kms?!!!" It's apparently the way JD rolls!
Pulled into Agnes creek just before dark and set up our first Outback bush camp in time to watch the sun set. Another stunner.
Our best camp site yet. Real Outback Australia, camped in red dirt amongst the gum trees. Even made a campfire and toasted marsh mallows.
Sky seemed enormous, so many stars. And SO quiet!
Grace was trying her hardest to be a pain in everyone's neck!
Had BBQ chicken wings for dinner except for those that didn't think that was up to standards, early night. My first night of decent sleep, still some snoring but apart from the occasional road train it was silent!
