We are half way through our time in Fernie and therefore way overdue an updated blog! Time has absolutely flown by and we are having just the best time. Our days consist of lessons during the week and the weekends are often busy with other activities, the past weekend being a highlight when we went Cat skiing in Fernie backcountry. Lessons are going really well for both of us, confirmed when we both past our Level 1 instructor assessments a couple of weeks ago. So now we are qualified instructors!! An awesome feeling and acheivement. We are now both working towards our Level 2 which means we can teach at intermediate level. Its going to be hard work but worth it. Dan is also going to do his park instructor course so he will be jumping all over rails and boxes all the while trying to look as cool as possible!(as I have learnt this appears to be the most important factor of being a snowboarder!) We had the oppertunity to teach at a local community hill recently and it was great fun. I was very pleased to take on some absolute beginners and see them starting to parrallel turn by the end of the day and really enjoying themselves. Very rewarding.
I think we have both settled into Canadian life pretty well. We have been watching lots of the local ice hockey team and playing curling. We are also used to huge portions of food and drinking plenty of local beer!! The Olympic coverage has been great here and it was awesome for Canada to do so well. The Canadians are very patriotic and passionate about sport so its been a wonderful atmosphere around town and on the ski hill.
The only slight dissappointment is that the famous Fernie Powder has not really been that regular. We have had a few good days of really deep fluffy stuff but it seems Canada is having a bit of a heat wave with not much snow fall. A lot of the snow around town has already melted away. However that said the snow on the hill is still amazing and we cant complain when we have had several gorgeous 'blue-bird' days when the sun is shining bright without a cloud in the sky and the 'goggle-tan' is coming along nicely!
Anyway thats all for now, Love from the two ski-bums xx (Dan wishes to note he is not in fact a ski-bum but a board-bum!)
