Dani on Tour
After a 6hours bus trip from Puerto Natales we arrived in El Calafate in Argentina. We had to pass some of the Andes on the way from Chile to Argentina, it was snow everywhere and it was actually quite scary to sit in the first row in the bus because the bus of course was an old one and nobody took care of the snow on the road...but luckily the local bus driver knew what he was doing or knew how to drive this bloody bus in winter conditions! Even on the Argentinian side we had ice on the road and we passed an accident car which came off the road with two local Argentiniens who were badly injured. The car was not recognisable as a car and our bus driver was kind enough to call for help!
In the afternoon we arrived savely in El Calafate and soon after we checked into a very nice hostel overlooking the village (America del Sur). Everything seems so organised here that it almost feels strange to be a tourist...El Calafate itself is quite modern compared to the places I have seen so far in Chile. Most of the houses are made from wood (all kind of Swiss style), the food is absolutely delicious and the people very friendly. On the first evening here, Lisi and I went out for dinner and had the most amazing steak ever! What more can say then please try Argentinian Steak if you can! The bottle of red wine we had was from the Mendoza area and again, absolutely lovely with the meal. We enjoyed it so much that we took our time and suddenly 3h were gone!! Back in the hostel we met some travellers again who we already travelled with in Chile and exchanged travel advices etc. - heaps of fun!
After trying to decide whether we should rent a car with a couple of other travellers or take a bus tour to the Perito Moreno Glacier, we ended up doing the bus tour as it seemed to be the saver option. The weather on the day was sunny but cold. Unfortunately, as soon as we came near the glacier, it started to rain and never stopped again. Nevertheless, we took the catamaran to get to the glacier as near as possible and it was incredible! Because of the clouds, the ice appeared really blue and the glacier was very high and wide. We even saw the ice falling into the lake which apparently is quite unusual! Back in the hostel, I prepared some lovely Austrian potato goulash for us, just so that I do not forget how to cook...;-))
The bus ride from here to our next destination San Carlos di Bariloche would be 33h from here and therefore we decided to fly. Unfortunately, that means that we are stuck here for a few days but to be honest, relaxing is very nice too (not that we do anything else since we left London)!! Window shopping, having some more nice meals and wine as well discussing further travel destinations is a good alternative to sitting hours on the bus! The weather is still very windy and cold but we hope that will change the further we travel up north...
