We left the hostel all excited about our road trip =) We got the airport shuttle with the intention of getting a taxi to the Apollo depot nearby, however this didn't turn out the way we wanted it to. Once again we hadn't printed out the address (we've lasted six months, why start now?) and the stupid taxi driver couldn't understand Dani's memory attempt so whilst we rang the company to clarify, he emptied the car of the bags, moaning that he was losing business and telling us to get out... how rude! Unlucky for him, as soon as he moved our last bag we got the address and got into a different taxi!
After a very long wait and paper reading/signing, we were shown our camper that would be our home for the next 6 days, whom we named Herb! Herb was pretty cool... he had a table and sofas/chairs which folded into a double bed, a kitchenette, a roof bed and because it was a high top camper it meant we could stand up fully, very spacious!
Once we had learnt about the boring... sorry... the important things like checking the oil etc, we were off! After a little navigational difficulty (heading in the completely wrong direction), we headed off on our way. 6 days to get to Perth... EASY!
The first day we absolutely floored it as we wanted to get to Adelaide before dusk (its dangerous to drive after then) and arrived just after 8.30 pm. We were waiting to hear back from a guy called Al who offered for us to stay at his hotel and show us round for a few days when we met him in Thailand, but when we hadn't heard anything by dark we decided to find somewhere ourselves. We found a campsite but the office was closed so we thought we would chance our luck and sneak in. However, when we saw a vehicle driving around really slowly, we panicked and left. We parked on a street around the corner and then in the morning just snook in and used their showers! Ha ha, saved us $30.
We went on a supermarket run once we were ready and stocked up on supplies for the rest of the trip before driving to Botanic Gardens where we parked up for the day. The plan was to find the Rundle Street Market but after walking up and around Rundle Street and not being able to find it, we stopped and asked a local. We were told that it wasn't on that day and when we asked what else there was to do, the two lads smirked saying 'not a lot', hmm... We weren't liking the sound of this. We then asked where we could watch the Tennis later in the evening, two places were suggested before we were asked into the nearby pub for a drink. This turned into a big Sunday Session with our new friend Mark (the other guy went home early as he was suffering from the previous night). We went to the Lion later on to watch the Murray final (bad score) and had a little bop before going back to our little camper with some people and a bottle of Smirnoff =)
Needless to say our intention of an early start remained as an intention as we didn't leave Adelaide until the afternoon. But once on our way, the real part of our road trip began! The following three days of driving were long, and filled of views of.....nothing!! To amuse ourselves we decided to play a game where we kept a look out for kangaroos. This game failed miserably, we didn't see a single live one, instead we saw 105 dead ones! As well as those, we saw 1 dead wombat, lots of dead rabbits and birds, 2 live eagles and an emu family!
The third night (the first two nights were in Adelaide), we stayed at Penang, the 4th at Caigun and our last in Brookston. All of these were very small places with nothing at all to do and some strange people occupying the area.
After numerous petrol, toilet and photo stops (all marked on the map along with the dead kangaroos), we arrived in Perth! 3542 kilometers, across three states in five days.....DONE!!!
