Sam and Dani's Year Of Fun
We arrived in Piura alot later than expected due to stops the bus company decided to take, but once we got there we jumped on another bus headed for Chiclaya. We only decided to go here because it broke up the journey to Lima and because we were intreged about the so called ´witch market´. The town wasn't anything what we were expecting, we thought it would be really small with a few houses and the market, but it turned out to be quite big with lots of shops, restaurants etc. Although we had stopped drinking a few days earlier in preparation for the Inca Trail, Tayma and Joep persuaded us to have a few beers, after all it was our first night in Peru =)
The witch market was a lot smaller than we had thought but had all sorts ranging from snake skins, herbs, plants and some tacky glass bottles with ¨magic stones´ in. Most of it is just for tourists but there were some things that were quite disturbing including the monkey that was at the entrance who was being forced to dance, not very nice to see! After a brief look around we then went to the normal market that was ajoined, and this is where Joep and Tayma decided to be extremely brave and get their hair cut by a local for $1! As Tayma was getting her hair cut two locals came and interviewed us all for the local news channel, it was to be aired the following evening but because we were on a bus we have no idea if it was or not, we could have missed our claim to fame!
That evening we said bye to Joep and Tayma until after the Inca Trail and got an overnight bus to Lima. We decided to pay a little more for a bed so that we could actually get some sleep, and also so our belongings were a little safer. When we got on the bus we were well impressed, big spacious leather seats that reclined 180°, just what we needed! But then we saw a couple come on with a small toddler, uh oh this isn't going to be good! But we couldn't have been more wrong, the little boy was an angel sleeping right through and then in the morning sat happily with his Mum. It was the large guy behind Sam who snored all night that was the nightmare, we´ve never heard anything like it!! There was also an old lady that kept reaching out to grab Sam when she went to the toilet, talking some crazy Spanish to her, very freaky!
When we arrived in Lima we got a taxi to a hostel that the Lonely Planet recommended. Because it was so early they said we couldnt check in until 12 so we went to the copycat one next door. It seemed ok at first but we soon realised that although they clean often there are still little bugs everywhere! In the bathroom, on the bed, under the fridge, even in the cutlery draw!! Yet, despite this we stayed there two nights =s We got the bus to the Plaza de Armas which is the main square and went shopping for last minute bits for the Inca Trail. Dani wasnt very well that night so we didnt do much else in Lima. We moved to the hotel provided by Gap as part of our Inca Trail package and met some of our group. It was a nice change to have a bed without bugs =)
