Day 61- Sun 9thOur Greyhound bus was at 8.30am and it took 5 hours to get to Byron Bay. As we were leaving Coffs Harbour it started to rain and we prayed it would not be following us up the coast. We were dropped off in the centre of town, could tell instantly that it was full of surfer types and had a chilled out atmosphere. The high street was cluttered with tour operators, internet cafes and funky shops. We got a cab to the Byron Bay Beach Resort which we soon realised was a little out of the way. Our first impressions was that it was nice and not too different from resorts like centre parcs with wooden cabins set in acres of rainforest. There was also a golf course nearby and the beach was only a short walk past hole number 7!Our cabin was cute, it was open planned with a small living area and kitchen. We unpacked and checked out the resort before taking a walk along the gorgeous stretch of beach from our resort all the way into the main area of Byron Bay. Along the beach we had to cross a creek which could only be done at low tide, it still had a very strong current and the water had a red tinge.. we felt like Moses crossing the red sea! Just past the creek was the nudist section of the beach, we had been warned in various booklets that Byron did indeed have a nudist beach but we didnt realise how many people were going to be on it. A man was innocently strolling up and down the beach stark naked and we all burst into fits of giggles..how old are we?? We got to the main beach which was busy and had a look around town. We booked our trips to Fraser Island and the Whitsundays in Peter Pans which seemed to have the best deals. We had a massive shop in the local supermarket which took a while as we tend to be indecisive about food and then went back to our cabin to catch up on 'so you think you can dance?', the best programme ever to come out of Oz (except for Neighbours of course).Day 62- Mon 10thWe spent a few hours on the beach today and then thought it would be worthwhile using the pool back at the resort but just as we had got back it absolutely tipped it down with rain. It took a while to clear but once it had Vicky, Lisa and I went on one of the walking trails around our resort. We also had a good planning session today about the rest of our trip.Day 63- Tues 11thThe three of us wanted to see Cape Byron which was the peak of the bay and is famous for its lighthouse. It was a very long walk from our resort but we stuck to the designated trail that took us round the cape to a secluded beach. By the time we got there we were too exhausted to walk up the hill to the lighthouse, i think we had been walking for at least 3 hours so we sunbathed a bit on that beach before it began to cloud over. As we were walking home it started to rain even though it was still sunny. There was a beautiful rainbow over the bay and i took a few photos. Whilst we had been doing our walk Angie had been in town and had bumped into Mia and Martina whom we had met on the Contiki tour in New Zealand. We organised to meet them in the local bar in town, Cheeky Monkeys. The bar had a few games going on as we got there, mainly involving stripping but afterwards they cleared the tables so everyone could have a dance. Day 64- Wed 12thWe went on our trip to Nimbin today and were picked up from our resort in a rainbow painted bus. The driver was a hippy and a little crazy but it was funny. The weather was still dodgy today but it didnt dampen our spirits as we entered the Aussie home of hippies and marajuana. The town itself as pretty small and the high street was full of random shops selling all sorts including you know what. All the people on the streets were funky and there were a few old aged hippies with long grey beards who looked like they had sat there since the 60's. There was even a Nimbin Museum which was eclectic to say the least but had information about its aboriginal history and the festivals that had been held there in the past. Our next stop was to a pub which really wasnt worth the stop and then it was onto a waterfall. We were allowed to swim in it so we feverishly jumped in..well i say jumped but it was more like make fools of ourselves trying to keep on the rocks until we broke into a doggy paddle. It was amazing swimming in the waterfall, the water was cold but fresh and luckily the sun had come out. We moved onto a local picnic area where our driver cooked us tons of sausages and burgers. We got back to our resort and pretty much went straight to bed. Nimbin was definitely worth the visit. Day 65- Thurs 13thWe checked out of our resort today and moved a bit closer to town to a hostel called Backpackers on the Beach. The hostel was fine, had a nice garden and pool area which we got straight onto. It was very hot today and i couldnt even stay long in the sun before wanting to dive into the pool...this is the kind of weather we had been expecting! I went into town for a while, enjoyed just walking around the shops and it was full of backpackers. This is another town that i really enjoyed staying in and it was worth moving to be a bit closer to the centre. After chilling by the pool for the rest of the day, we headed back to Cheeky Monkeys for dinner and then a show....a wet t-shirt competition counts as a show??!! It was a chance for all the 'lovely' female backpackers to show off their assets, the first prize was $300. We moved onto another bar called Cocoamingas but it wasnt very lively in there so we went back to the hostel for our last night in Byron.
