On packing up at the Maitland River we hit the bitumen and headed for Carnarvon. We had planned to stay just outside of town by the beach but we could not find the right turn off so we ended up at a caravan park about 4kms out of town. After leaving Point Samson we headed to the historic port town of Cossack. There are still a few buildings left and there is a heritage trail you can follow around the town becoming informed on its history as you go. It would have been a very pretty coastal town in its day. We headed into Port Hedland on packing up at De Gray River. We had a look at the port area and the main street before heading on. Lunch was out the front of the Whim Creek Hotel, about 100km west of Port Hedland. Whim Creek has an iron ore mine and a pub. On leaving Barn Hill we stopped at a the Sandfire Roadhouse for petrol before heading to Eighty Mile Beach for lunch. A gorgeous isolated beach. We decided to continue on to the De Gray River campsite. This was a free spot 82km NE of Port Hedland on a pretty dry river bed. It was a nice spot for an overnight stop. Kylie
