Dan and Claire go worldwide
After much anticipation and excitement, we landed in Hong Kong ready for some city life. The weather was incredible, so unbelievably humid, the city often lingers around 80-90% humidity, and it felt like it!! Claire was a sweat bag 24/7--minging!! The hostel/hotel that we had booked on-line was a shocker, something out of a horror movie! It was a high rise, dirty skyscraper with some dodgy characters lingering about, but our actual room wasnt as bad apart from the screaming kids next door, and of course, the lack of any windows (oh and the hard bed, commonly known as a 'rock bed' according to Dan!).
On the first night we explored Kowloon, and went to the famous Temple Street market, hunting for cheap goods amongst the locals. We began to realise just how amazing the shopping is in Hong Kong! We continued to find this everywhere we went within Hong Kong in the next few days, it was absolutely crazy!! The whole city is basically a mix of amazing shops (most of which we couldnt afford to go in, so we just spied through the windows!) and impressive skyscrapers. The amount of rich people and amazing cars on the road was unbelievable. A mercedes here is like a Ford at home, its the norm, with a few Porches, Ferraris and Rolls Royces thown in!!
On the second day we went over to Hong Kong island on the Star Ferry across the harbour. Whilst fighting our way through the shops and hoards of people, we took as ride on the longest escalator in the world at half a mile long!! We then stopped for lunch in the trendy Soho district which was much more charming and quite, before heading down to Causeway Bay, where i have never seen so many frantic shoppers in my life!! Crossing at a pedestrian crossing was like watching a herd of cows coming towards you!! In the evening we went out for our first yummy chineese of Hong Kong by the trendy Knutsford Terrace, before retiring home.
The next day we decided to be big kids for the day, and headed off to the newly opened Hong Kong Disneyland!! I had been excited for days, and we had an absolutelty brilliant time! It was really, really, good fun, with fantastic shows, some good rides for Dan, a lovely parade and so much to do. In the evening we headed to the Avanue of Stars, where we only recognised one 'star', Bruce Lee. We then watched the Hong Kong Symphony of Lights. Its basically a light show using 70 odd buildings on the harbour, lighting up various parts.
After feeling that we had had enough time to explore Hong Kong, we headed off to our last destination, Thailand, with some lovely memories in tow.
