It's a hell of a town! It wasn't just a clever slogan; I love New York!
Hayley and I got up at the ungodly hour of 2:30am to make our way out to the Buffalo airport. There are upsides and downsides to flying out of Buffalo. The upside is that we could cross the border much more swiftly and easily and of course save a huge amount of money. The downside is that we needed to leave the house by 3am to make our 6:45 flight. We arrived at the airport without a hitch, and the flight went smoothly with only a ten minute delay in leaving. We arrived at JFK and very proudly figured out how to take the train/subway combo to our hotel (pat on the back for us). Navigating underground unfortunately was the easy part. Trying to figure out how to get around the construction of the new World Trade Centre to get to our hotel, was quite the challenge- aha, so that's why it was so cheap!
We unpacked our bags and quickly set out in search of coffee. We stumbled into a little café near our hotel, took one look at the food and immediately started salivating. It had everything from create- your- own salad, to pastries, to the most amazing looking sandwiches you could ever hope for. Within seconds of our first bite we started plotting how we could squeeze in more meals just to eat at this place.
We wandered up North along Broadway and spent time exploring, and of course shopping in, the different neighbourhoods- Soho, Nolita, China town, Little Italy. By about 2pm we were ready to crash, so we wandered into what looked like a self-cater place with seats, and were once again blown away. They had everything you could ever think of. We filled up our containers and then started discussing how we could manage to eat at both places a few more times in our three day vacation. Honestly the food culture here is unlike anything I've experienced elsewhere and kind of puts Toronto to shame.
But Hayley just got out of the shower and I'd like to take a quick rinse so we can head out to enjoy some more of our culinary adventure. So details on dinner delayed!
