Arrived last night in Quito. Great flight (but long!) with KLM. Crazy cab driver drove us an hour plus to the city, weaving through traffic and then around the block a few times until we found the hotel. We are staying at Casa Kanela in the Mariscal district. Cute little place with great service. Amadeo was very friendly and helpful getting us settled in. Quito seems quite expensive, at least compared to what I expected. I thought it would be much cheaper here. Prices seem more like some places we have been in Eastern Europe like Croatia, Slovenia and Romania. Maybe it's just Quito. The neighborhood is great though. Incredibly quiet and pretty, tree-lined street and when you walk just one block down the street you are right in Plaza Foch and all the crazy disco/bar area with the steady thump, thump of music and large groups of mostly local youth hanging out. So anyway, we waited around for an hour and finally our wandering daughter showed up after a long bus trip up from Banos. It was so great to be reunited with Sivanne again after 8 months of only Skype connection. We immediately went out to the center to get dinner and catch up. Had a great light meal at Magic Bean restaurant. Potato cheesy soup with avocado (yum) and salad. But jet lag (or altitude?) started to take it's toll and we went back early to the hotel to sleep. I slept from 8:00 until 6:00 but this morning I have a headache like a hangover (without the fun of the night before). Altitude kicking in? Today we're off to sightsee in the city and renew Sivanne's Israeli passport so eventually she will be able to come back home.
