Today started the usual travellers way, up nice and early for breakfast and ready to do some more adventuring. Firstly we headed off to the Tuol Sleng prison (Genocide Museum). This was a very moving and emotional time for us all as we learnt about what happened to the prisoners, how they were treated, and all the facts and figures like who was in there and how many survived. We saw where they were kept and the things that were used on them. We also saw photos of the prisoners and images of some of the life in the prison. Learning about it and hearing it all was overwhelming but such a cool lesson. At the end of the tour we got to here two of the seven survivors speak in person at the prison and tell us a bit about their story in the prison. Then we were very lucky and got to take photos with them.
After that we all jumped on the bus and headed to the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek. Again another very emotional time as we walked slowly around the ground learning about what each part of the grounds was used for and how they were used. We also walked through the memorial full of millions of bones left from the fields paying tribute to those who were killed there. While our tour guide told us stories and his experiences of what happened to him and what he heard and seen during the genocide when he was a little boy.
We carried on the trip heading to Siem Reap, we were on the road for a couple of hours before we stopped for lunch at a nice wee restaurant and tried some more Cambodian food, still amazing! Then we headed up the road a bit more where we stopped at the river markets to see the summer foods for sale - tarantular, crickets, snakes, scorpions, as well as some fruits and other things. A few people were brave and gave them a go, while others just opted for holding them or watching others do the job. It was a lot of fun and a nice wee stop before our 5 hours to Siem Reap.
We got to Siem Reap around 6:30pm, where we said goodbye to our tour guide, Keam, and hello to the next one, Hang. He welcomed us and told us our plans then we checked in and made ourselves at home before free time heading to the pool, down the street for a look, or into the night markets to experience some new Cambodian things and do some more shopping!
After that we all checked in and headed to sleep to get ready for our last proper day on the tour.
