Neil's journey
Arrived in capital yesterday, its what you would expect from a capital city (noise, traffic, extremes of wealth and poverty etc.) - the trail seems to head from here down to the beach, I think after Siem Reap and then here, everyones ready to go swimming and take it easy.
Its not that you have to be particularly intrepid to travel here (guesthouses arrange EVERYTHING from buses to visas, laundry to ringing your grandmother) - its just that as soon as you leave the hotel (its 4 pounds a night, you could just about call it that) people hassle you to take taxis, offer you drugs, girls, books, silk scarves - its all part of the travelling thing but not being used to it, I've found myself wanting to get back to my room to lie down and watch TV...
Budget accommodation is great, specifications are as follows (a top ten)
1 - dank, slightly stale smelling room
2 - dirty walls, where people appear to have picked their noses and wiped the contents on the wall
3 - two beds (different sizes) shoved together so you fall down the middle in the night
4 - one sheet, two suspicious lumpy pillows, threadbare towel
5 - air con (not really budget I know but hey read on) that only works on low setting and even then when you turn it off and on several times) - the remote control is just for show
6 - light switch just about hanging on to wall - repeat on and off manouevre for operation
7 - 3000 watt light bulb (without shade)
8 - Constant banging, moving of furniture and screaming in the middle of night which makes you get up and barricade the door
9 - All in one "wetroom' bathroom where you can sit on the throne, take a shower and brush your teeth at the same time
10 - Absence of toilet roll - you do as the locals do and use the HOSE (the force could put out large fires) - Interestingly a geordie guy I was speaking too said his mate was so impressed by the hose, he installed one when he got home - he found out that the water from the north sea is a little colder than here though and duly reverted to Andrex.
So there you go, also went to genocide museum and killing fields today - needless to say very horrible, sad story about madman and his regime removing people from the town to 'work' the land and then becoming this paranoid mess that kills everyone - do you know to this date no one has ever been brought to trial for the deaths of literally millions of people?
