We went for a wander on Sunday night and come across "the worlds first ever spray painting dancer and juggler". His name is Wayne Gabalyo and he did a free demonstration of his work and it was actually pretty cool. The finished product was amazing and can't believe it was from spray paint! If you want to check him out, he is on youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7mu5ksJMP8
Things got a lot quieter here in Waikiki on Monday. We made the most of this and did a bit of shopping and exploring. We also went for a swim in the hotel swimming pool and someone needed the "after sun aloe vera gel". Suprisingly, it was Troy and not Michelle that had a pink back from floating on a lilo in the pool!!!!
We went to happy hour at the round table sports bar and enjoyed watching 5 channels of sports on 5 50" TV's. We had pizza again but knew not to bother with the Hawaiian and just had yummy garlic chicken and garlic italian.
On Tuesday, we went out to Pearl Harbour. It was amazing, but also very sobering. We went to the USS Arizona memorial which is over the sunken USS Arizona Battleship. 1,177 men died here including 23 sets of brothers and a father and son on 7 Dec 1941. Over 900 men are still entombed in the ship below the water.
We also went on the USS Missouri Battleship. This was also an amazing piece of history. We got to stand on the place where the Japanese surrendered to end WWII and see the documents that ended the war, including where the Canadian guy signed on the wrong line so little old New Zealand had to make do and didn't have a line to sign on! We hsve a picture of this so check it out along with more details about what we saw on the Missouri.
We also went on the USS Bowfin Submarine. We didn't last long on here as it was very claustrophobic and made us feel seasick! It was amazing to see what the crew lived in every day.
For lunch we had hotdogs and their cheese was a hot, liquid in a fountain thing similar to what the hot fudge sauce was in at the Pizza Hut dine in restaurants! We didn't try it, but the Americans had heaps!!!
We had another nana nap after our Pearl Harbour trip - getting very accustomed to these :-) We then went down to the beach to the hula demonstration. It was very cool to listen to their songs, watch their dances and listen to their stories as the sun set behind us.
We then went to Denny's for tea which is meant to be a 24/7 diner but it closed for maintenence and we were the last customers taken for the night. It was surprisingly cheap and tasted OK too.
We had breakfast in the hotel this morning with a lovely American couple from Washington. It was nice to listen to his stories about watching the Pearl Harbour bombings from his house when he was 6. A welcome relief from yesterdays Asian couple that sat at our table and chewed noisily with their mouth open and spat phlegm into the rubbish bin and garden!!!!
Today we are going out to the Polynesian Cultural Centre which is the top paid attraction in Hawaii. It even features a little bit on NZ so looking forward to that! Hope to get some more photos for your veiwing pleasure up today :-)
