We drove down to Waitomo in the morning which took a couple of hours or so from Auckland. Once we'd checked in to our next B&B we asked the owner about how's best to go about exploring the caves. So half an hour later we were booked on to a tour by Spellbound who took you to the glow worm caves. We had a windy drive up the hill side to get to them and then a short walk to the entrance of the first cave. We had helmets with torches on as it was pitch black. Once inside we had a few stops where we turned off our lights and watched as the glow worms came into focus. There was thousands of them! It really looked light a starry night being inside there, and the roof of the cave was very close to our heads so we had a fantastic view of them. This cave had a water source running through it which meant we got to have a ride in a boat. It was pitch black as we were going down the water with only the light of the glow worms, and as we continued we got closer and closer to a waterfall as we could hear the water rushing over it. Being sat at the front of the boat made us a little nervous as we were pretty sure we were about to go over the edge! However, sneakily there was a barrier that we bumped into but with it being so dark we couldn't see it. That was a very good trick to play on unsuspecting tourists! The second cave was lit so we were able to walk much further into it. Our guide took us through explaining about different elements of the cave, how things were formed etc which was all interesting. After the tour we drove to a small area just outside the main town to do the Ruakuri Bushwalk. It was beautiful. It was very rainforest like with a river running through it. We were the only ones there and it was so peaceful. It also took you through smaller caves or a platform into one as well which was cool. We had a very nice dinner out at a local restaurant and had a couple of glasses of wine, so it was a lovely day overall.
