We thought we might do an overnighter in the large town of Geraldton, but decided instead to detour towards the coast through the Kalbarri National Park and camp in Kalbarri itself. We were a few months shy of wildflower season, and much of the vegetation on the way in had been burnt in summer fires, but I could well imagine this drive must be sensational in spring time if you love Australian natives like I do. Kalbarri is a really picturesque little town too, right on the coast but protected also by the Murchison River. Leaving the next morning along the North West Coastal Hwy was also stunning, with more green of farmland starting (first we'd seen in a while) and all sorts of banksias, wattles, eucalypts, grass trees etc along the coast side.17km south of the small town of Cervantes is the Pinnacles National Park. I'd seen this on the front cover of the WA Lonely Planet years ago and always wanted to visit. We weren't allowed to take the camper on the 'desert drive' so we parked the car up, and walked the 1.5km around the amazing pinnacles, playing 'Where's Wally?' and taking turns at finding the next marker (would be quite easy to get lost). The area covered by these Pinnacles was much bigger than I'd expected and pretty spectacular. One piece of literature suggested they were ancient root structures covered by sand dunes and then exposed through weathering. Either way, we saw a few more of them beside the road on our way south to the tiny town of Guilderton - approx an hour north of Perth - and Clive's holiday house, where we spent the next 2 nights chilling out thanks to Clive's generosity.
