There is an awful lot going for Esperance as a holiday destination. Some of the best beaches in Australia, great waves, picturesque waterfront, plenty of cafes, and great bushwalks - if only it wasn't so darn far from everywhere! It lays claim to fame of housing much of Skylab's remains which crashed in 1979 between Esperance and Belladonia. The beautiful Recherche Archipelago is home to countless birds, seals, and fishing prospects around the 100 or so islands. I think those who work in Kalgoorlie and Norseman use this place as their coastal getaway, free from the city hoards from Perth who'd have to be keen to drive the 10 hours to get here.
Anyways, as you can tell, we love this town. Our first visit 13 years ago is still remembered fondly, so will a winter day of 23 degrees to do some sightseeing was greatly appreciated. With impeccable timing, we'd just finished our outside activities and doing some shopping when the wintery weather rolled in - there's nothing between here and Antarctica afterall.
The Esperance museum is a bit of a hoot. Set in the old railway station, it is crammed full of old cars, train carriages, ye olde fashion, shells, machinery, and of course Skylab artefacts and old newspaper clippings. A short, but very sweet visit. We've already discussed how we can return in warmer weather so we can swim.

The Wheatons Hi guys. By now you are probably half way across the Nullabor and have home in your sights. Loved reading your blogs from WA. It's an area that will be on our "to do" list for another trip one day. Swimming with the whale sharks would have been an amazing experience-sounded fantastic, as did all the other places you visited. We have just left Umina (40 km north of Sydney) this morning and will drive the 750km all the way home to Yarrawonga today. It is a bittersweet feeling-it will be nice to be home in our own beds but I have a sense of dread that our wonderful holiday experiences have come to an end. Some absolutely amazing memories and experiences to draw on though and it has certainly been a family holiday that will be etched in all of our minds forever. I'm sure you will agree. We are so grateful to have camped next to you at Wilpena Pound and shared some of these great times with you along the way. It was fun!! Safe travels for the rest of your journey and good luck with getting back to "normality" when you return. Amanda, Ash, Will , Chloe and Mia :)
georgiandpaul Hello! Hope you made the big drive home safely. What a great and memorable journey you've had, and we so enjoyed sharing some of it with you. Are you going to put the pics into a book? I'm hoping to, can't wait to look through it on a regular basis. Hopefully will catch up with you all in November but will text you closer to the time. xxx
