Paul and I met a little over 20 years ago (yikes!) in London. I had just finished 10 months of travelling through SE Asia, Europe and Middle East, and landed myself a job in the wine trade in the nic of time - almost out of money. Paul grew up in Howick, Auckland, and had already lived in the UK for 5 years before we met. He had travelled all over England, Scotland, Scandinavia and parts of Europe.
Both of us have very itchy feet, and even after moving back to the Southern Hemisphere (NZ for 3 years, then to Australia since 1999), have visited South Africa, Mexico, Mauritius, Fiji, Thailand, Spain, Jordan, Hawaii, and of course NZ on numerous occasions to visit family.
In all of this we had the various trips around Victoria, Queensland and WA but had never had the luxury of time to get out and see the real guts of our country at a more leisurely pace.
It's now or never as the saying goes.
Our kids are at the perfect age (hopefully) to appreciate the small things without being too bored in our company, and we're not old enough yet to baulk at the idea of roughing it a bit ... so off we go for 3 months.
In the middle of our family adventure - Paul will fly from Broome to Perth, meet up with co-driver Andrew, and take part in the crazy "s***box Rally" all in the name of supporting the Australian Cancer Council. Over 200 teams will drive from Perth to Darwin via the Kimberley in a car valued at less than $1000. A great cause and a lot of fun. Check out www.s***boxrally.com.au for some great vid diaries of previous years. Their team is called "s***box Jellyfish" in reference to previous IT projects that have stung them.
Along the way, my must sees/do's are:

Fiona Good Luck guys. You are right about the kids being a perfect age! When they get to my kids age just me being near them irritates them! I know you will have a fabulous time. Keep us posted. have funnnnnnnnnnnnn!!!!!
Gavin Great itinerary. Give a thought to canoeing the Katherine Gorge. Anne and I did that exactly 16 years ago. Hard work for a couple of seniors but quite spectacular and worth it. Not too sure whether the girls could handle it yet though, check it out !!
