A few friends had told me about the amazing Ghibli Museum in outer Tokyo - dedicated to the animated movies of Hiyao Miyazaki- and warned me that you need to book well in advance to get in. We booked through JTB online around 2 1/2 months before leaving and think they were sold out for our preferred day not long after. Being prepared sure had its reward. Spread over 3 floors, with a garden and giant robot statue on the roof dedicated to an earlier movie "Castle in the Sky", a cinema showing a short movie downstairs, galleries of drawings and paintings showing the workings of each movie, working robotic models, a cat bus from movie "Totoro" to sit in - it was an incredible day for young and not so young. I suppose it's because, while the movies are animated and appeal to kids, they usually have a strong adult message or slightly dark feel. Awesome stuff - but sadly no photos allowed inside. After a few hours rest, we caught the train to Roppongi, and walked around 20 mins to the Gonpachi restaurant, which inspired a famous scene in Tarantino's " Kill Bill 1". The staff all shouted a warm welcome, we watched the chefs in the middle doing their thing, and the food from the set menu really good too. With our pocket wifi, we used our phone maps to walk through the pretty back streets of Roppongi and into Azabu-Juban, actually a shorter journey than using public transport.
