After leaving Krabi (yay) at 10.30am, we had a 7 hour journey to take us to Koh Samui. After a number of minivans, buses and then a ferry we arrived at Penzys' Guesthouse in Chaweng, Koh Samui. We found this place on hostel world, and it had great reviews so we were really praying it would be ok after our previous night's accommodation. We weren't disappointed!Penzy and her husband David are so lovely and the hostel is great and clean! We could have nearly cried with happiness! We settled into our new room for the next four nights, had really long showers and grabbed a bite to eat at a near by bakery/restaurant that an English couple, Gemma and James (who arrived at same time as us) had just come from and recommended! The rooms here all have DVD players and David has a ton of DVDs that you can borrow so we picked a few and decided to head to bed early for a proper nights sleep!
We had a lie in the next morning, and as David had warned us, used our earplugs to drown out the noise of the building works outside our room which start at 8am, and don't finish until 8pm! Not to mention the bar in front of the hotel that plays really really loud music till 2.30am!This was the only drawback to this hotel, although the hotel being built is nearly finished, and the bar is 'donating' to the police so they can get away with it.But when the earplugs are in, it's totally fine!Spent a fun day travelling to Tesco's to buy a new camera! We got a decent wee Sony one which will get us until we get our fav one posted out to Australia! Then we'll at least have a back up! (Wonder who'll be left using the 'crappy' one!)
We got chatting to Gemma and James more today. They're such a nice couple, who have been doing a similar trip to what we've planned, only the other way around. They're now on their last two weeks before going home so we were getting as many tips and info out of them as possible! Pity they hadn't been going the same way and we could have had travel buddies again! We went to the bakery place for dinner again, the foods so good and cheap not too! When we got back to our room, we got another DVD - Role Models - so good, and then went to sleep, think were still wrecked from all the moving around, lack of sleep, being sick etc!!
We had yet another lie in today, some serious recovery needed by us it seems! We spent a few hours just chatting away to James and Gemma again, before heading out for a wander, late lunch and finding somewhere for Craig to watch the Formula 1 Racing final that night.I wasn't feeling good, just felt so drained, even sitting eating was tiring me out, so we headed back to the room to shower and lie down.Hoping it's just all the tablets and sleep pattern being so messed up.Craig skyped home and then had to go watch the F1 on his own as I was out cold! Poor Craig! He came back not impressed that Vettel won the race, but had a number of £1 beers which raised his spirits a bit!
The next day we decided to finally hit the beach (even though it was only 5mins from our place!).Weather was lovely so we stopped off at… the bakery for some food then cut through a nice hotel to get to the beach!A nice guy from the hotel gave us sunbeds to use for the day for free, which was great, and we chilled out for a while before going swimming.Laura noticed a sign for £2 pedicures so just had to go for one - so I headed for a walk down the beach to explore a bit.The beach was nice but we had seen pictures of Kho Samui and it wasn't as spectacular as we were expecting but we thought this may just have been down to the recent stormy weather which had left a lot of debris washed up on the beach! At the end of the day we were relaxing on the beach in Kho Samui so couldn't complain too much!
We got totally trapped in the hostel the following day with heavy rain flooding all the surrounding roads and almost flooding the ground floor of our hostel - it got quite close but thankfully subsided in time!Went to the local mini mart to stock up on food for that day as we didn't know if we would be able to get anywhere to eat that night as a lot of the shops were closed and had to wade through water on the beach road which was knee deep!Thankfully it calmed down a bit in the evening but it disrupted our plans for travelling onto Kho Phangan the following day.Our visa's were due to run out in a couple of days for Thailand and given the bad weather we didn't want to travel onto another Island further off the coast and risk getting stuck out there as some of our friends had a few days before. We decided to stay an extra night in Kho Samui and then head to Langkawi instead which was on the other side of the Thai/Malaysia peninsula and which was experiencing better weather.Booked our tickets through Penzy at the hostel and headed out for a bite to eat with Gemma and James. Was a celebratory night as Laura has now finished her antibiotics - yay!!
Our last day in Samui was spent on the beach relaxing in the sun, packing up our stuff and heading out for a bite to eat and cocktails with Gemma and James again.Had drinks at a camper van parked at the side of the road which had been turned into a mobile bar - their drinks were so good and cheap….so we had 2 each and headed back to bed for our last sleep in Samui.
We spent our final day in Thailand on the road travelling from 6:30 am.We got picked up from the hostel and dropped at the bus terminal and after a few changes from bus to bus to ferry we were on the way to Surat Thani - the port town in Thailand. From there it was about 5 hours in a cramped mini bus to our next stop.We thought we were travelling all the way to Satun (where we had to stay for the night ahead of our boat to Langkawi in Malaysia the next morning) but got dumped at the side of the road 65km from Satun and told in very broken English that another bus would be along for us at some stage!!We stood at the side of the road for around 30 minutes in torrential rain until a coach finally came for us that was totally full and I mean totally. There were 3 people in each row (which only had 2 seats), people standing in the aisle and people all sitting on the stairs! We managed to get squeezed in on the stairs of the bus for an uncomfortable drive to Satun. We felt pretty uncomfortable on the bus anyway as we were the ONLY foreigners and all the locals thought we were trying to dodge paying as we hadn't got a ticket (our ticket had been taken off us earlier that was for our full trip) and shouted at the conductor that we were to pay £2 each to get to our destination! After some explaining to the guy who didn't speak much English we didn't have to pay but did have to endure the glares of all the local who seemed disgusted to have us onboard!!We didn't have a place to stay when we arrived in Satun at around 6pm so we started walking around trying to find somewhere.I had seen a place online so we tried to get a tuk tuk driver to drop us there but he had other ideas and dumped us at another hotel which he decided would be better for us!!It was a dump and we refused to stay after checking the rooms so we left and continued walking. We eventually found the hotel I had seen online and checked into their last room (which also turned out to be a lie) for our last night in Thailand. It was ok and a lot cleaner than Krabi so we grabbed a bite to eat in the hotel restaurant and headed to bed.
We have thoroughly enjoyed Thailand (except Krabi and Satun) and will be sad to say goodbye to it but we have plenty more to see in Asia and not long left to see it so we are looking forward to Malaysia and Singapore to round off the first leg of our trip!!
