We have now been away from home for 50 days! It's the 22nd of November and we are on the way to Penang in Malaysia, our final Island before heading back to the mainland.
We left Langkawi in the morning and jumped on our ferry which was a high speed boat and got us to Penang in around 2 ½ hours. We arrived around 5pm beside 2 large cruise ships and looked for a taxi to take us to our hotel.Didn't quite get a taxi but a rickshaw instead peddled by a man who had to be at least 65 years old. With both of us on plus our 4 bags he struggled so it took a bit longer to get to where we were headed but he got us there nonetheless even though at points we didn't think he was going to make it!First impressions of Georgetown was that it didn't feel like we were on an island - lots of traffic and plenty of high rise buildings made it feel like another city rather than an island but we would see when we explore more tomorrow.
We were staying at a Tune Hotel which was really nice and not too expensive. It basically is a pay as you go hotel in so far as you get a really comfortable bed and great shower as standard in the room but everything else is an optional extra such as a/c, internet, towels etc.Their motto is 5 star sleeping experience for one star price - wouldn't exactly go that far but it was a nice room (even though it was tiny) and the shower and bed were excellent although there were a few ants about (we are paranoid about ants no after our nightmare night in Krabi Guesthouse)!!Didn't feel up to doing much our first night so we grabbed food at a BBQ Chicken place which turned out to be pretty gross and headed back to the room!My (Craig) stomach started feeling a bit dodgy about 2 hours after dinner so I crossed my finger and headed to bed hoping that it wasn't going to be a case of food poisoning - it wasn't in the end thank god!
Georgetown, the main town of Penang isn't that big so we decided to explore on foot on day 2.Once again we slept in (bed was so comfy) which meant we were out walking about in the hottest part of the day - bad choice! We walked around little India, saw a couple of the town's temples and visited a house which although didn't look like much was the building that held meetings that decided the fate of the last Chinese dynasty - very significant to Asian history apparently!Grabbed a bite to eat in one of the few Banana Guesthouses scattered around the town as we were both starving and it got us out of the sun for an hour!We were both exhausted from the heat so we headed back for a nap and to book our hostel in Kuala Lumpur.
Grabbed a bite to eat at the Soho Pub which like an authentic British pub - food was good but drink was expensive so we left for the Reggae Bar for a drink before heading home.It wasn't what we expected but it was fun. They sit you down at a table and then anyone else who arrives is sent to your table as well which gets everyone mixing and chatting straight away which really works and is great for meeting new people.Got chatting to a couple of older guys, one from Australia who is soon to start sailing around south east Asia for the rest of his days and the other from Singapore who apparently is one of the best tattoo artists in SE Asia and works out of what sounded like a brothel in a dodgy area of Singapore. He told us we should come along when we are in Singapore - we politely declined!Lightning started up again as it seems to most nights out here at the moment so we left the bar and tried to beat the storm back to the hotel, again we were lucky and didn't get wet!
Got woken up at 2am in the morning by kids running about and screaming in the halls of the hotel - bad choice by the kids! They got both barrels from Laura and seemed to disappear after that!Anyone who knows Laura knows that if you disturb her sleep you will have to suffer the consequences - I on the other hand slept through most of it as usual!(Can I just add here they were teenagers- like 17, before people start thinking im shouting at wee kids! But they were so annoying! About 15 of them giggling and shouting and all!)
Off to Kuala Lumpur tomorrow which we are both really excited about then onto Melaka for our last stop in Malaysia before Singapore! Can't believe how fast out time in Asia has gone - we now about 1/5 through the trip. Time flies when your having fun I guess!!
