Having flown for 3 hours over desert (I hope I'm not writing the pudding version of this word) Heather and I landed in Alice Springs. The time difference was 30 mins which I thought was bloody pointless...hey ho. We got to our Hostel Toddys and to be honest it was a bit of a poo hole but the bedrooms were clean and we were only there a night before going on our tour. The first night we just had dinner and sorted our stuff for the next day.
We were picked up at 6am for our 'Rock Tour' I dont think anyone was really "with it" cos it was sooo early and I think all my partying was catching up on me! There were 21 of us and I met some fab people. The first day we went to a farm and had a camel ride which was hilarious and then we went to a Aboriginal Cultural centre and then onto Ayers Rock...It was about 4 hours drive from Alice Springs and it was amazing. We wandered around the base and then watched sunset...It was really majestic and the rock doesnt look like you think it would. It looks like its just flown from planet Mars with big holes in it and craters/scrapes etc. That evening we slept under the stars in swags..what an experience....I have never seen so many stars in my whole life..it was so beautiful and we all sat around the camp fire chatting and it was just gorgeous! I managed to sleep ok ish but we were up at 5:30am...nice/ We then did the base walk around ayers rock as the sun rose. Heather, Laura and her boyfriend Rob and I walked together. It was fab. After leaving there we went to The Olgas and had a long walk around, it was gorgeous and we wandered around and took lots of pictures. It was then back in the bus to get to Kings Creek...Another really long journey....you dont realise how spaced out these things are! We got to camp pretty late and had dinner and sat around the camp fire. We played loads of games and I had to dance around the camp fire by myself and sang its raining men...I know what a loser but it was one of the dare games we had been playing on the bus so i had to do it! In the morning we got up at 5:30 again and went straight to Kings Canyon for our 5 hour walk. The wind was SOOOOO strong I thought I was going to be blown off the side of it! The first part of the walk is called "heart attack hill" but I didnt think it was that bad! This was where Priscilla Queen of the Desert was filmed, I havent seen it yet but need to cos everyone out here goes on about it! It was a great walk and we all really enjoyed it. After that we were all starving so we had lunch and then drove a while to a salt lake....never really understood what they are. We walked on this salt lake and I had taken off my hiking boots cos my feet were hot so I was in my flip flops. The salt lake was a bit slushy under foot but not that badly. Our guide Mika said lets all have a race...so we all lined up and all of a sudden my WHOLE BARE FOOT sunk into this thick clay like mud and I was stuck!! Laura was laughing so much she nearly wet herself and I was almost crying with laughter as I looked down to see my foot black to my ankle! Laura then decided to jump on my back and I got my arm covered... it was hilarious! We wandered back to the bus.
On the journey back to Alice Springs (5 hours) we had such a laugh on the bus doing Kareoke and playing games etc. It was awesome and we all had such a good time. When we finally got back we all showered quickly and went to Toddys for dinner and then onto Bojangles..a bar in town. At the bar they have a webcam so I told my parents to log on and I was waving to them like a lunatic. It was soo good knowing they could see me, would have been better if I could see them back though. The next morning some of us went for a quick breakfast before I needed to go to the airport. Luckily Henny, one of the german girls was on my flight. I had such a nice time and met people I know I will stay in touch with. I had to say goodbye to Heather as she was going back to Melbourne. Off to Perth...watch out W.A here I come! x
