Our first stop in Thailand is the island that has become a rite of passage for almost every English person to visit, Ko Phangan. We take a really expensive taxi (thanks to the taxi mafia on the island) up to the North and checked in to a place on Haad Khom beach.
On the beach we drank a lot, ate a lot, swam a lot and read a lot of books. It was great. The only interesting thing worth mentioning was a very funny conversation I had one with an English guy while we were soaking in the warm afternoon sea. Dave had just been fired, or as he put it voluntarily laid off by the BBC.
He had been a freelance script writer, working mainly on Eastenders for the past four or so years and he appologised and took responsibility for many of the story lines 17m Brits tune in for. Although Dave laughed that he had never watched an episode of Eastenders in his life. He would receive a file on each of the characters, with their major events written in the file and who was linked to who. He then gets the basic story line and his role is to try and make it all sound plausible.
But, he said he was fired because of a different program he was researching for. He was commissioned by the BBC to travel the world and research the life of Ian Flemming, the author of the James Bond books as it was coming up to 100 years since Ian Flemming was born. Dave had to interview people who met Ian Flemming and visit places Ian had traveled to. Dave told me he soon got very bored with the research and couldn't find many people still alive who had know Ian Flemming, so he started researching the bars more carefully while inventing elaborate fictitious stories about Ian Flemming. Inevitably the BBC starts to get suspicious, especially when Dave reports back Ian Flemming did a skydive in New Zealand. They called him back to the office to explain what he had been spending the BBC's money on. Dave refused to return, as he was having so much fun, so he finished his employment, and has been staying in the Bungalow next to ours for the past seven weeks!
