The following day we decided to head north to Panjim, the capital of Goa, its very Portuguese. When the British Raj gave India back to the Indians in 1947, the Portuguese decided to keep Goa. So, according to a man we met on the train the Indians flew a plane over Goa and dropped a single bomb, apparently the Portuguese reaction was, ok, its yours, keep it, and they surrendered Goa. The peoples faces are an interesting mixture of Indian and European, and everyone seems to be called Angelo or Pedro. During the bus ride Kat sat next to a middle aged Indian woman called Doris, who was so chatty and told her snippets of her life story explaining that her mother, who was traveling with her was 81 and other than a knee problem was the most sprightly 81 year old ever seen, it must be all the great curries she's eaten over the years! Doris told us about her church, many people in Kerala are Christians and Roman Catholics and love a good chat about religion. We asked what kind of church she went to and she started telling us all about Adam and Eve- had I heard of them? - and the snake in the Garden of Eden -very bad- and about Jesus -very good. It was a Sunday so we nodded and listened and finally explained that yes we had heard of Adam and also Eve. She showed us where to get our next bus at the station and we said our goodbyes as her 81 year old mother skipped away grinning at us from behind a good set of gums. As it was Sunday and the streets were all empty we decided to follow the Lonely Planets suggested walking tour, but first a beer and a samosa at Maradona's bar. The Indian owner is according to the guide book a dead ringer for Maradonna. He was very drunk when we found him in the afternoon, and ordering a samosa gave him troubled expression. After a phone call his friend arrived with then in bag for us. The streets were all very European and as it was Sunday nicely peaceful, wells and fountains on each street corner. Buildings painted in pastel colours. Still enough for one day and the next morning we took the bus out Cooper Out Love Dan & Kat
