Onwards and up to our next destination, Uyuni. The gateway town to the Bolivian salt flats, an ancient ocean now dried up forming the largest salt flat in the world at 4,085 square miles (10,582 square km). We drove out for a day trip, us, an Israeli couple and 2 Japanese guys all in Toyota pickup. This time of the year the salt flat becomes flooded with the rains, about 10cm of water cover the salt which remains in its normal crusty formation below the water. The layer of water means that everything around you becomes a mirror image, and as everything around you consists of the white clouds and the blue sky, there is nothing but clouds and sky above you and clouds and sky below you leaving you with a strange flying sensation. Our first stop was to visit the salt market where the ladies sell products carved out of blocks of salt, everything from ashtrays to sofas were for sale. Then its off into the salt plains to visit the salt hotel, walls, floors, beds all carved and constructed out of salt blocks, very strange. We drove on to fish island in the middle of the plains to have lunch and take silly picture in the alien landscape.
