We have spent the last 4 days in the city of Siem Reap and visiting the sights of Angkor Wat. It has been a busy few days and I think it's safe to say that we are Wat'd out. But the sights have been fantastic.
We got here a day early to figure out how we wanted to attack the many temples, plus to spend some time in the actual city.
Our first day of temple visits we rented some bikes, not the moto type as they don't let tourists ride them around here. We think this is just so that the tuk tuk drivers can boost the economy. First of course we went to Angkor Wat. It was beautiful and really showed the power that the people must have had at the time. Really is a must see in your lifetime kind of place. After we made our way to Banteay Kdei before heading into the unique Ta Prohm. In Ta Prohm we found the trees that grow there to be quite a sight. Trees with massive roots were just growing out of the rocks. It instantly became our favourite. At night we went for sunset from Phnom Bakheng. Unfortunately we were a bit late taking our bikes back and got a tuk tuk a little later that we had wanted to. We arrived at 5:30, pretty much as the sun was actually setting, but we still had to climb the hill to see it. We went to go up the path and there was a guy to stop us and told us it was closed as it was 5:30. We tried to argue saying the sun was just setting now and we could still see something. He said no and another guy came to back him up. So we walked back down and went up the other path, which conveniently nobody was guarding. We did make it up the hill to see the end of the end of the sunset.
We found a fantastic tuk tuk driver, Mr Kosal. He was really nice and we ended up using him for the next two days. He would call us Mister Del and Madam Del. We lucked out in finding him.
The Following day we went to Angkor Thom, Preah Khan and Banteay Srey. Angkor Thom is the old city of the Angkor empire. It houses many sights, one of the most famous being Bayon. Bayon is a different type of temple and on the top each tower has four faces. We went early in the morning, which created a great light as the sun came up. Preah Khan is located in the middle of a jungle, but not quite as taken over as others. On our way to Banteay Srey we had a lovely drive through rice patties and local villages. The temple is referred to as the Lady Temple, and because it is so far out it was very peacful to explore.
On our final day at the temples we decided to really go off the beaten track and went to Beng Melea, 2h drive away. Although it costs an extra fee and the trip is quite far, it was worth it. This temple has been left virtually untouched. It really gave you a feel of what it must have been like to come across the temples in the first place. We could climb though the temple and explore all its areas. A real Tomb Raider feel. On our way back we visited the Roluos Group, which are some of the earliest temples built in the area.
Tonight is our last night in Cambodia. It has been different from the other places we have been to, but enjoyable just the same. Next up we head for some fun in the sun on the southern Thai island of Koh Lanta...
