OK, not much time to write. And no pictures, not for about two more weeks. sorry.
SO, I stayed in Cusco Peru one more day after I last wrote doing lots of errands, such as going to the police, because my wallet got pickpocketed. Great. BUT I still have my passport, the ability to get money, and its all fine. Very irritating, but not the end of the world. Ugh.
BUT because I spent a few more days in Peru it made it necessary to take a bus from Cusco to Puno, on Lake Titicaca. I needed to hurry because after Dec 1st Americans had to pay 100 USD dollars to enter. That kind of money can go a long way here, so I didn't really want to pay that. I started biking on the 29th, crossed the border on the 30th (in the pouring rain) and had a clebratory pancake at the border town of Copacabana. There are two (or more) Copacabanas in the world, the one most people have heard of is in Brazil and is warm. This one is at 3,800ish meters, or 10,000ish feet. It was cold, rainy, and hailing, but my pancake was amazing. Being at this elevation actually does have an effect on people, and makes things like breathing and walking (and, needless to say, BIKING) very difficult. I tried to cough at one point, and couldn't get enough air to make anything happen!
I biked from the border to La Paz, the capital, in two days. La Paz is in this crazy canyon, which made the descent into the city very fun, but I was dreading getting back out. Anyways, made it into the center and choose a hostal in the Mercado de las Brujas: the Witches market. It was really cool walking along and seeing the normal apples, bread and sunglasses for sale next to petrified cats, frogs and birds, offerings of candy and fake 100 dollar bills, crazy charms, and the weirdest mixture of smells.... I bought a traveler's protection charm, its true. Stayed two nights in my hostal, which came to a total of about...8 dollars. Yeah Bolivia. Wandered around for two days, bought a mnap of the Salar de Uyuni (where I am going next and also what my picture is of) met up with some people I had me in Peru around Halloween, and 5 of us went to a local soccer game. The game, both La Paz soccer teams, was between the La Paz F.C. and The Canada Strongest. Right. The Canada Strongest won, 100% sure that no one on that team was from Canada.
Then, two days ago, I got up bright and early and made the climb out of the canyon, and then started across the altiplano the here. Altiplano means "high flat", which could maybe give away what the terrain is like. I biked for about 4 hours today without turning, it kind of makes you go crazy! Last night I slept in a field (during a thunderstorm, exciting!) and tonight I am in Oruro, which is north of the Lakes Poopo and Uri Uri. No hard to describe at all. Tomorrow I will go to the end of the pavement, and then in about a week more I should get to Chile, after going through a salt desert hundreds of miles wide. Cool!
OK, gotta go, in Santiago Chile I'll put up pictures, promise.
