What an amazing and somewhat agonising day. We got up and all headed out before breakfast. Boys in one car, girls in the other. We took both cars so Billy and Rich could leave when they'd had enough. We drove staight to Kings Park. We parked right at the top with every intention of getting the tour bus down the hill and into the city. Turns out there's only 1 bus an hour and we'd just bloody missed it! The boys, namely Fella, said it wasnt that far so we might as well walk. Jesus Christ! We had to walk down the steepest of hills. I was not prepared, as I thought we'd be on the bus, and wore stupid, but beautiful shoes. By the time I reached the bottom my feet were on fire. Richard walks everywhere at 100 miles and hour at the best of times so with me hobbling along I'm sure he wanted to drag me along by my hair. Just as I was giving up the will to live we made it to the bottom. It was like a route march. Good way to see the city though.
Once in the centre I realised its not as impressive as London. It has some beautiful buildings but overalll our architecture is better. Its actually a lot smaller than I thought too. Big enough to make my feet hurt but probably the size of Canary wharf.
We hadnt had breakfast brefore we left so we were all in need of refreshment, and a chance to rest my feet. We found a coffee shop that was in the bottom of a sky scraper and plotted up. Sven the russian took our order for coffees, paninis and toasties and duely delivered them to our table. It was as Sven walked away we realised Richards toastie had sauce in it!!! The look on his face was a picture. He hates it so much. Nick went and ordered him another which was a major operation as no one in Australia seems to understand the concept of no sauce.
After breakfast we wandered around the city. Slowly. We stumbled upon London Court, which Billy still hasnt seen, so we headed there first. Its a little street that has been made to look like London in the old days. Sort of Tudor-ish. It was lined with all sorts of shops. Some selling modern stuff like bags, shoes and jewellery, while others had the usual souviner old toot. I came half way round the world to be amazed by a shopping arcade made to look like London. You cant help but wonder! Unsurprisingly, the boys were far less impressed.
We walked from one end of the city in no time. Its not that remarkable because its only small but with feet of fire it was quite a task. The city isnt as rushed or smoggy as London. The streets, the people and the air all seem so much cleaner. We saw the bell tower, the giant metal roos and the harbour. I loved it. We decided to go our seperate ways at this point. Much to Richards relief I'm sure. We fancied a boat trip up the Swan river and Billy and Rich opted for a bit more walking. Nick bought himself a new hat so while we were waiting for the boat we had to scrutinse every inch of his spanking new purchase that he is oh so pleased with.
When it was time to board Captain Cooks boat we decided to sit outside. It was really sunny and not too breezy. I'm not a massive fan of boats but the water was calm and the boat was big so I figured we'd be ok. No danger of me needing to float down the river on the back of the toilet door while blowing a whistle. Which was just as well. At first glance the water looked quite inviting. On closer inspection I noticed it was swarming with jelly fish. Some were only little but some were massive! Just one more thing for me to concern myself with. By was of distraction I took pictures. Again. Of the river, of the jelly fish, of the skyline, of each other, some featuring Nicks new hat, some not. All this photography is thirsty work so Nick went off in search of a cuppa. Tea and Coffee was included in the price of our ticket but he came back with a Gin and Lemonade for me. It was a really lovely surprise. There I was, reclining in my seat, head scarf flapping, sipping my gin. A real lady of leisure. It made me smile really hard.
It got a bit chilly after a while so we decided to go in. It was nice, if not nicer inside than out. The view was every bit as good but it wasnt windy and it was quieter. We saw yachts and posh houses lining the route. Is no one in this city skint? We sailed all the way to Fremantle. We didnt get off, just waited for the others to get on and off. While we waited i was gazing out to sea when I spotted a fin breaking the water. My first thought was it was a shark. I'm dramatic like that. I watched for a bit longer and it looked too jolly to be a shark so it must have been a dolphin. I snapped away with the camera in the hope of catching it. When I checked the pictures later I actually got its fin. Its only little but its there. You have to zoom in a long way to see it but its definately there. Most chuffed I am.
It was 5pm by the time we got back. We got straight off the boat and onto a CAT. Its a free bus that runs around the city. We got off at Hay Street. The bus stopped right outside a little cup cake shop called Bella's. Considering we'd been deposited virtually onto its door step, it would have been rude to walk by. We devoured a cup cake and coffee while admiring the chairs that looked like they were made of glass and the chandelier that hung over the counter. After our quick pit stop we were back on the move. Back through London Court. It was actually a bit nicer this time as it was less busy.
After all that traipsing we still had to get back up the horrendous hill that we virtually had to abseil down in the morning. I was ready to hack my own feet off at the ankles so Nick hailed a cab. While on foot it felt like a thousand miles, it was actually a really short car journey.
Back at the car the sun had set, the wind had picked up and it was getting chilly. People were mooching about in hoodies, hats and scarves and I was tripping about in a pale green tea dress and sandals. Spot the tourist! As evening fell we are off another mission. Luckily I had a spare pair of sandals in the car so there was no need to hack my feet off afterall. After all the to-ing and fro-ing it was probably more than my feet that Nick wanted to hack off. Armed with my bag, flat sandals, my camera and the tripod Rob lent me, we're off to the viewing platform for night time shots of the city. We traipsed to the edge of the park got the camera out and then spent THE most amount of time faffing about with the tripod. How hard can it be? Its only got 3 legs? The fact that it was dark and we couldnt really see what we were doing didnt help. I got the camera attached, got the tripod in position and readied myself for the first picture. At which point the leg collapsed and the hole lot nearly shot over the barrier and into the pitch black bushes below. Take two. The legs are secure, the camera is securely mounted and we're ready again. Only this time its so dark I cant see the controls on the camera! Another faff ensues and Nick rummages in my bag for the phone so he can work the torch and shed some light on the situation. It was honestly like a comedy sketch! Eventually though I did take some amazing shots of the city below us and I even managed to catch the traffic so its just a blurry line of head lights and tail lights. Once we got the hang of it we were on a roll and I even sussed out the timer so we could both be in the pictures at the same time.
