After leaving Hervey Bay with fab memories and lots of new friends, we boarded an overnight bus to Airlie Beach. The bus was 45 minutes late and had a lot of people, most of us didn't get much sleep, so we were glad when we finally arrived! We were staying at the same hostel as the other people from our group on Fraser so we all made our way over together, then we headed out with Jeremy to the lagoon. The sea at Airlie Beach is unsafe to swim in because of jellyfish, so there is a man made lagoon which we sunbathed by as it was such a hot day. While cooling off in the lagoon we bumped into Henriette and Henrique, 2 Danish girls we met weeks ago at the surf camp! We had a good catch up then went back to the hostel when the sun started to set. Back at the hostel we discovered something amazing: the hostel had free wifi! It was the first hostel in Australia we'd found with free wifi, usually it's really expensive so we spent a happy couple of hours catching up on everything before having cornflakes for tea as the supermarket was so expensive. They actually tasted really good though! We miss little things like cereal as its so much hassle to buy milk and things that need to be refrigerated. The next day we did what we had come to Airlie Beach for: the Whitsunday Islands! The 2 things that every backpacker to Australia does on the east coast are Fraser Island and the Whitsunday Islands. We decided to do a day trip rather than staying on the boat for a few days, and we booked with this great company who use really fast speedboats so you get to see in one day just as much as people on overnight trips. We arrived at the jetty and hired stinger suits so we could swim in the sea, then we set off! Our first stop was an island where we did a bush walk with a look out over the famous Whitehaven Beach (where we went later) then had an hour snorkelling where we saw hundreds of different kinds of coral and fish in the sea. Our guide told us that the water was much clearer than normal so we saw lots of sea life which was awesome! After this we spent a blissful 2 hours on Whitehaven Beach, which was recently voted the worlds most beautiful beach on Trip Advisor. It really was beautiful, especially from the lookout we went to earlier! This completed our trip around the stunning Whitsundays so we headed back to the hostel for our cornflakes. We had a nice surprise though when Mark and Dev (the American guys we met on Fraser Island) generously gave us a third of their dinner to share! They'd been fishing and had some to spare so we enjoyed a delicious meal of fish, rice and veggies (without the fish for Colette of course!) before heading out with the guys. We had a great night and ended up staying out later than planned but we had a really nice last night in Airlie Beach before getting the bus (Again the bus was late but this time it didn't matter as the bus stop was right next to Airlie market and we took it in turns to have a wander) Our next destination: Magnetic Island!
