In heavy gray clouds at dawn, we board the boat back to Punto Robalo. It's been a continual guessing game about the weather. Our goal is a day spent traveling up and down the Fortuna Road, a famous birding locale for forested areas at different elevations, catching mixed species flocks. Unfortunately the rain did not cooperate. Bands of heavy rain/drizzle/mist cycled through all morning and into early afternoon. Miserable, frustrating conditions, teasing out a few species, but what are you to do? Even the rain-soaked sloths looked miserable clinging to cecropia trees.
By mid-afternoon we get below the cloud cover and find a quiet sideroad and the sun comes out. We do get to see some good birds showing their colors, unlike our morning birds that were shrouded in fog and gray light. A couple thousand migrating Turkey Vultures kettle above us on our way back to the dock. After the storm they're headed north.
