Our planned walks this morning came under a rain delay. We tried to wait it out on the porch of our cabin, seeing a few good birds. The birds are so happy getting their first baths in a long time; it's the end of the dry season.
At breakfast, the banana feeders attract a flock of bright yellow Prothonotary Warblers. Two Capuchin monkeys conspire to reach a branch laden with bananas. They shake, reach, and finally jump, successfully gathering up as many bananas as they can carry away. The lodge's owner says during the pandemic, with no tourists, the small monkeys took over the decks, even managing to break one of the heavy Adirondack chairs.
Bands of rain continued all day. We walked a muddy trail eventually but our boat trip to nearby Isla Popa didn't happen.
We did visit Ramone (Spanish), a neighbor who used to guide at the lodge, who Jesse knew. He and his partner (Columbian) live simply off the land. A couple of decks with tin roofs serve as living space, recently enclosing a bedroom with spare room above. It's a tiny house/treehouse. A garden, chickens, outdoor rainwater shower. Makes you consider what counts as life's necessities.
