Tassie Trip 2015
Day 5
Bicheno
The sun returned today much to our delight. We awoke slowly today to cloudy skies - we had a bit of a sleep in on order to chill a bit being on the go so much and with some later nights recently. The sunset after 9pm really does mean you pack heaps into the daylight hours.
Today was all about exploring the surfside town of Bicheno. There are 2 surf shops - that's should put it I to perspective in this small east coast hamlet! Of course it's the middle of summer and all the locals have full steamers on and it's 15 degrees in the water but hey, we're on holidays so no need for steamers here - just a rashie and boardies.......
We walked to the blowhole on the rocks and did a circuit loop of the foreshore rocks around the Gulch and back to the spot overlooking the beach we had that magnificent sunset last night. The Elephant seal was still there moulting and sneezing and should be for another month apparently.
The weather cleared into a perfect blue sky day just before lunch and so we decided to drive up to Redbill beach just along the coast and spend the afternoon with the local surfers.
Even though the water is cold, the crystal clear water on the fine white sand is far too enticing!
After dinner at the park, we decided to go up to Whalers lookout to watch the sunset before heading back down the hill to where the blowhole is to look for fairly penguins ourselves. We had spotted lots of burrows and nooks on our walk and so wanted to see if they indeed had any occupants.
By 10.30 pm when we finally left, we had a tally of 6 fully grown penguins and 4 babies. Not anywhere near the 35+ we had seen the night before but this was our own finding so was more enjoyable.
Tomorrow we leave this beachside paradise and head further south along he East Coast to the Port Arthur peninsula.
