Outback Adventure 2019
Day 4
Worlds End - Burra - Crystal Brook - Port Pirie - Port Augusta - Woomera
It was daylight savings time last night...we didn’t reset out watches. We got up at 7am (6am) in the dark and got on the road at sunrise. We had driving to do!
We left Worlds End and headed into historical Burra where we did a drive by of the beautiful stone houses and the old miners huts and diggings. So many beautiful stone buildings and churches. We fueled in Main Street and then headed off towards Spaulding and Crystal Brook. From there it was onto Port Pirie to see the huge Great White replica caught in 1998 and most importantly to food shop.
Cayden,Lana and Rin commandeered a trolley from Woolies to our van parked in the visitors centre. We filled the fridge and cupboards with food and hit the road again to Port Augusta. We fueled at Augusta (last of the cheap fuel for a while) and then hit the roundabout that all big decisions are made at! The Eyre Highway to Perth or the Stuart Highway to Darwin. We went the Stuart Highway.
The Stuart Highway is (for mine) the start of the Outback. You quickly leave civilisation (Augusta) and the expanse of the red dirt and salt bushes are quickly upon you - it’s a very different landscape! More importantly though we hit the roadtrains! So far we have only passed the 3 trailer long trains but I’m sure tomorrow we will meet the 4’s . Lana is yet to experience these beasts.
We saw our first wedge tail eagle for the trip feasting on fresh kangaroo by the roadside.
Speaking of Roos, we straight slalomed the whole way from Augusta to Woomera around the roadkill this afternoon! They were everywhere on the highway!
We rolled into Woomera at about 3.30 and are staying at the caravan park tonight- first time on power and water for 4 days to recharge everything.
We did a drive by of the town and checked out the historical rocket and missile testing relics from the 60s and 70s that are abundantly on display around the town.
Our drive by took us to the local sport grounds that were both completely full of kangaroos! Hundreds of them! Added to that they are all through the town on the roads and we even saw an emu walking one of the streets!
We drove 419 ks today and saw a gazillion kangaroos and another hundred odd emus.
Tomorrow we drive to Coober Pedy and the freakshow that comes with Opal mining.
