Day 4
Streaky Bay - Ceduna - Penong - Nundroo - Nullarbor
"Its the wide open road...."
We watched the sunrise over the beach at Streaky Bay this morning, had a walk along the beach and then out on the long jetty. Streaky Bay is a lovely spot and it was a shame we didn't get to stay longer and explore all that it and surrounds have to offer.
We hit the road just before 10am today and drove thru Smoky Cape, Ceduna and stopped for lunch at Penong. Its a funny town Penong - famous for its windmills - literally a hundred in the one paddock! From there it was onto Nundroo and finally the Nullarbor.
The Road Trains really caught up to us today for the first time this trip. Big 38 metre boys that shake the whole car as they rumble past you . Double Yellow lines? Who cares! They will take you anyway!!
We've officially started the Nullabour! Its much more greener than I had expected too - quite a lot of vegetation actually! Had our mandatory pic with the kangaroo, camel and wombat sign at the beginning of the Nullarbor - although we didn't see any! It is a Sunday though - maybe they are all at Mum's having a lamb roast??
Our bush campsite tonight is spectacular! We are literally right by the cliff edge overlooking the Great Australian Bight - 130 kms from the WA border. We could have made the border today but would have missed the opportunity to cliff camp which is something I've always wanted to do!Plus we saw an awesome sunset tonight and ate dinner overlooking our waterside digs watching the last remnants of the light fade.
The kids continued their ukulele practise as well under the stars. Miss Cobes will have Carly Rae Jepson down in no time!
I guess they call this spot prime waterfront living - its the right price too totally free! The sunrise in the morning should be great too!
