We arrived early in Hue expecting to be picked up by our Hotel that we had pre-booked but we were left waiting for a while! We got a taxi in the end and checked in before getting breakfast and going to book our bus onto the next stop Hoi An. The weather was awful - really tipping it down all day which put a dampner on things! We took a 4 hour trip on the Perfume River to the Tu Duc tombs and a pagoda. Our first stop was the tombs, where we were met by moped drivers who took us the 1km or so to the actual site. It was still raining and the boys mentioned they were holding on quite tightly! Whereas I was holding on with one hand taking photos with the other! It was great fun! The tombs were really picturesque but as it had been raining it was really slippery and Sam fell over and hurt himself. We stopped off at the Pagoda and then got back just in time for lunch. I was a bit disappointed with the River, as I had been told its the thing to do - and definately visit Hue as it's beautiful. We didn't see this, but it could have been due to the weather.
In the afternoon we went to the Purple Forbidden City and the Citadel. Again, not much to see but I think the fact it was still raining definately put a dampner on the day. In the evening we went for another curry then back to bed.
The next day (sun 21) we did the DMZ (demilaterised zone) tour. It was an all day tour and we spent most of the time on the bus! Although we did get off at a war statue, the rockpile, a bridge which used to denote the border, the tunnels and an American Air Base. It was an interesting day and I learnt a lot about the Vietnamese War I didn't know. It was also amazing to see the tunnels where people had actually lived and there was a man at the tunnels who I think worked there. Our guide told us he had lived in them since he was 7 and it was obviously really. He didn't speak (although he understood Vietnamese) and he was tiny! Must have been only 4ft if that. But he was so friendly and happy to pose for photos and was waving us all off!
